Lucan will pitch for piece of 2001 Games
Reeve Rob Brady feels Lucan
has a shot at hosting pre-
liminary ball and soccer action
By Craig Bradford
T -A Reporter
LUCAN Lucan could get a piece of the 2001
Canada Summer Games action.
Lucan Reeve•Rob Brady said the subject came up
when_ he was speaking to some London councillors
at the recent Association of Municipalities of On-
tario conference. Lucan could offer its softball di-
amonds and soccer pitch to the games committee
for preliminary round games, Brady said.
"1 can't see why not," Brady said of whether Lu -
can's involvement in the games could become a re-
ality. "We have perfectly fine -facilities --our soc-
cer pitch is one of the best in Middlesex."
Another bonus. is.Lucan is on the way to sailing
and beach volleyball action at Grand Bend. -
- "With Grand Bend being used this stretch of high=
way -will get a lot of use," administrator Ron Reym-
er said.
- Other sporting nuggets from last week's Lucan
council meeting: _
Arena upkeep •
A newpaintjob for the front of the Lucan Arena
will cost $3,500-$4,000, arena manager Paul Dyke -
man said. Work has been delayed due to the wait
-for special paint and the job should be completed in
twa weeks, weather permitting. Other arena- work:
four lit.sporting silhouettes. at 'the front of the arena
will cost the Booster Club $1,000 each; a -20 -year-
old compressor had. to be rebuilt. recently, for
$2,059; the pool house floor will have to be either
painted or refiled for next season. -
New face
Karen Holden replaces Janice Dauncey as the
pan -time arena maintenance •worker. The arena
management board chose Holden out of 22 ap-
plicants. Her duties consist of ice maintenance and
generalcleaning/upkeep.
• Slab for skateboarders
Skateboarders may get to use Elm Street park's
concrete slab for their passion. Brady said council
could use Mitchell as a•model for a skateboard park
- Mitchell simply. cordoned off a portion of a park-
ing lot with concrete barriers and told 'boarders to
make their own ramps and that .the municipality
wouldn't take responsibility for their activities or
monitor the area. Liability if someone was seriously.
hurt is the big concern, Brady said, but Mitchell's
mayor said council there isn't concerned about it
and one 'boarder had already injured their arm and
no lawsuit followed.
"It all comes down to how much liability the vil-
lage and the arena board. want to accept," Brady
said. "Maybe we should takea chance."
You use, you pay
Council opposed- Middlesex Centre Township
Transition Board's wish to get out of the cost shar-
ing agreement for the use of Lucan Arena. Brady
- said, all surrounding municipalities who have res-
-idents using the arena should pay their share- of its
operation and upkeep.
"Just because • they're a new municipality (after
amalgamation) doesn't mean people -will change
their (arena) usage," he said. •-
McGillivray Township, who along with Lucan
andBiddulph Township, ante up for the arena along
with London Township (pan of the new'.Middlesex
Centre Township), 'sent a letter to Delaware -dis-
agreeing with Middlesex Centre's move and sug-
gested the agreement be changed so Middlesex•Cen-
Ire is named, not London Township.
