Most 'of .the Ontario corn crop ap-
pears to tie about a week behind
normal -in the rate of development
GUELPH - A bulletin from the Ontario Corn Pro-
ducers' Association says earlier concerns about
drought stress in Southern Ontario have now all hut
disappeared. 'Ample rainfall has occurred across
Most corn -growing areas -of the province during the
past two weeks.. •
The big .Concern now is the continuing occurrence
• of colder: than normal temperatures: and the mount-
ing risk that the Ontario, corncrop, which was large-
ly planted in late May and even earty.June,.rnay be
damaged if frost comes early this autumn.
• Seasonal heat unit accumulation statistics mean
:little this year for_corn which was planted prior to
late May. This is because official heat unit calcula
Mins did pot .hegin until average daily temperatures
were above 55 F (12.8 C). in late May. Yet early
planted corn..did develp, albeit very slowly, prior -
to,that time. In fact, some early planted corn actual-
ly emerged before .the first corn heat unit was -of-
ficially recorded. This, of course, is biologically ab-
surd. About 150 corn heat . units. are normally.
requited for corn to germinate and emer$e.
Most of the Ontario corn crop appears to be about
a week behind normal in rate of development, but a
week ahead of the rate. of development seen at this
time in 1992. The exception is June -planted corn
which is more than a week behind normal.
The normal average first frost date occurs about
October 1, or later, in most corn growing areas of
-Ontario, but first date of frost has been known to oc-
cur as much as. one month earlier or later, in recent
years.
The OCPA average yield estimate for Ontario re-
mains at 109 bushels/acre, for the present time.
'As often occurs, September will he the "make or
break" -month formost corn crops in Ontario. If we
have a cold September, this year could see the first
test of the new "-salvage" component of the Ontario
corn.crop insurance program.
