Snowbirds perform for crowds at Centralia International Airshow Roobol family arrived 50 years ago Times -Advocate, September 3, 1997 Saintsbury children sleepover in Parish Hall By H. Davis Saintsbury correspondent SAINTSBURY - There was Tots of excitement at St. Patrick's Wednesday evening as the Sunday School children and teachers met at the church at 7 p.m. for a sleepover in the Parish Hall. • The evening began with -the "Service for Children" led by Courtney MacGillivray taken from the Book of Common Prayer. Katie -Scarlett MacGillivray led in the reading of the Psalm. The story'was "Come Join the circle" based on new Sunday School material from The Whole People of God which begins in September. Several camp games and Bingo were played before the lights were turned out. They enjoyed breakfast in the morning and then walked to . the Davis's for -lunch and an after- noon of swimming. Si. Patrick's will resume their fall schedule September7 with the Holy Eucharist service at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Stanley Jay offi- cient. Thursday evening the Davis's and McGillivray's wereguests with their parents for barbecue and swim to celebrate Harley's 1 lth birthday August 29 and Michael's September birthday before closing the pool. Michael., Suzanne, Crystal, Harley, Travis and Starr Davis • attended a 25th anniversary sur= prise .party honoring sister and brother -in -law -Linda and Con Foran on Saturday evening at Lucknow. On Sunday they attended a birth- day party honoring mother Dorothy • Dietrich at the home of Len Dietrich, Dashwood. Heather MacGillivray, Courtney, Katie -Scarlett, Caleb and Corbin were guests at the birthday celebra- tion on Saturday honoring friend . -Lucas Durnin of Auburn. Visitors this week with the Davis's were June Daer of New Hamburg, Marie Youngblut and Brenna of Woodstock; Bill and Betty Johnson of Owen Sound. •• By Mary Peterson . Centralia Airpark on August 27 was delighted by the opportunity to view the planes and visit with their - crews at the Centralia International Airshow. The CF -15s and Stealth have capabilities. that are amazing. Looking at the Hercules, one has to wonder how this unusual -shaped transport plane ever gets off the - ground. The highlight of the show, though.: was once again the Canadian • - Snowbirds. The Snowbirds have performed in front of more than_83 million spectators, and have inspired awe and appreci- ation.in several audiences at '-Centralia over the years. Tom Lawson and volunteers organized the event. Centralia United Church . Minister Heather Scott looks for- ward to greeting everyone back to regular worship service -on September 7. at 11:30 a.m. Rally Sunday for the Sunday School teachers and children •will be held during worship on September 14. September 3 at- 6:30 p,m. there will he cleaning bee at the church. Bring your dustcloths and energy. Although the teachers will miss spending time with the -children in last year's class, they look .forward to meeting the chil- dren in -their new classes for 1997- 98. = Everyone is welcome to special services with evangelist Lorraine-. Services will be held September 7 at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and at 7 p.m. from September 8 to 10. - Euchre results Many people enjoyed an after- noon of euchre recently at Larry's Restaurant in Crediton. Winners of High Hands were Helen McDonald and Mary Scott. Lone Hand win-. ners were Marian Noel and Charlie Rollings.- Ilene -Pullman -and. Alwinna Galloway were Low Hand winners. Anne construction Road reconstruction is well underway on Anne Street. The work also includes storm sew- ers, curbs and the installation of a storm outlet. The deadline date of Aug. 29 has been ex- tended. Hibbert Horseshoe Club holds final night Roberta Templeman Staffa correspondent STAFFA - Staffa Women's Insti- tute members enjoyed a pot luck dinner at the home of Marjorie Drake in Staffa, prior to the August meeting on August 27.. Kay Smale presided opening in the usual way. The Roll Call was answered by everyone bringing a stamped get well or sympathy card to the meeting. There were nine members present. Thc speaker for the afternoon was Sherri Jackson, speaking on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which she is dealing with at the present time. • Members were reminded of up - corning events and the September meeting was reviewed. Personals Congratulations to Robert Gar- diner who celebrated his 80th birth- day on Sunday with an "Open House" at Staffa Hall. Sympathy of the community goes to Brian and Dianne Elliott on the death of Joseph McGuire in Brace - bridge. Visiting for a couple of days with John and Roberta Templehtan were Eileen Greer and Knud Jensen from Campbell River, British Columbia. Thc Hibbert Horseshoe club held their final night of horseshoes for the 1997 season at the home of Frank and Claudette Elliott. finish- ing the season off with lunch. Thc A champ was Murray Chris- tic•The B champ was Harold Prid- harn. The doubles champs were Don Parsons and Dean Elliott.. The Roobols left Rotterdam on the 81h - and arrived in Canada on the 20th. The voyage took two extra days . due to rough seas. For • seven months they lived in Quebec before coming to the Thames Road areas wheie they -Red for two years... 1-f/ 4 miles east of- Hensall was their home for four years. Mr. Roobol was employed at Centralia and then at the Radar School at Clinton as a custodian supervisor. In 1965 they • built their home in Hensall where Mary still lives. One daughter, jAhree grandchildren and six.. great grandchildren complete their fami- ly. Families in Hensall, and sur- rounding area, are advised that reg- istrations are still being accepted for Tinker. Tots Co-op Nursery School and Kids' Club, in Hensall. Tinker Tots program is for chil- dren, aged 2 1/2 5 years old. Classes are offered two mornings 'a week, September to June.
