Scottish fantasy wraps up
CountryP!ayho use season
Brigadoon is a highland muscial
that combines the best ele-
ments of Scottish culture
GRAND BEND - The tartan was flying both on
stage and off during last week's opening of the Hu-
ron County Playhouse's final show, Brigadoon, that
will run until August 30. , '
The Scottish fantasy, written by Alan' Jay Lerner
and Frederick Loewe, is the story of a eighteenth
century village that disappeared into the Highland
mist and returns for only ole day every hundred
year. To the villagers, only; a day has passed but it
is the twentieth century when two young American
men stumble across the unmapped village.
The village has been protected from the evils of
the world by a miracle that can only be maintained
if no one tries to leave. However, someone frdm
the outside can remain in Brigadoon if they truly
love one of the residents.
The Playhouse production of Brigadoon features
original dances created by Anges DeMille.and mu-
sic by Loewe. Although the voices are strong, the
dancing is somewhat disappointing in constrast.
Bagpiper Ian Sutherland lends an air of authentic-
ity to the muscial in which Scottish brogues are
sometimes less than convincing. In all, however,
the production is successful in transporting the audi-
ence to a simple time when love and goodness are
victorious over evil.
Kristen Gauthier, as Fiona and Christopher Martin
as Tommy Albright make their Playhouse debut in
Brigadoon. Performing a dual role as director and
Mr. Lundie, is Brian McKay. .
For a musical adventure the entire family will en-
joy contact the Playhouse box office at 1-800-706-
6665.
Kristen Gauthier, as Fiona, and Chris-
topher Martin, as Tommy Albright, make
their playhouse debut in Brigadoon.
Follow your heart to Brigadoon
GRAND BEND Huron Country
Playhouse opened its final show of
the 26th season, Lerner and
Loewe's Brigadoon: Book and Lyr-
ics by Alan Jan Lerner; Music by
Frederick Loewe; the Original
Dances created by Agnes DeMille.
Brigadoon runs from August 12 to
August 30.
This production of Brigadoon is
directed by Brian McKay. Huron
Country Playhouse is pleased to
welcome back Union Gas as the
production sponsor and once again,
CJBK/BX93 returns in the role of
Season Media Sponsor:
This Scottish fantasy, written by
the team of Alan Jay Lerner and
Frederick Loewe, is the 'story of a
town that disappeared into the
Highland mist and returns for only
one day every one hundred years.
Brigadoon is a glittering, unique
place among the heather -strewn
hills of Scotland where the worries,
evils and aggravation of twentieth-
century living are left far behind. It
is a monument to simplicity, true
love and goodness, which is hidden
from the ordinary traveler.
When two young American men
happen upon this fabled town, they
cannot possibly know what is in
store for them. One moment they
are bemoaning their fates and their
unhappy hive lives, the next day
they are entering an eighteenth cen-
tury marketplace, complete with
vendors selling their wares.
Brigadoon premiered on Braod-
way a the Ziegfeld Theatre on
March 13, 1947. David Brooks,
George Keane, Marion Bell, Lee
Sullivan, Pamela Britton, William
Hansen and James Mitchell were
cast in this production's leading
roles for its world premiere. The
film version of Brigadoon saw
Gene Kelly sing and•dance his way
-into hearts around the world in the
title role as Tommy Albright. Since
1947, Brigadoon has been seen
around the world.
Once again, an ensemble cast, of
new and old faces, has been assem-
bled to bring to life this enchanting
musical at the Huron Country Play-
house. Kristen Gauthier as Fiona
and Christopher Martin as Tommy
Albright make their Huron Country
Playhouse debut in Brigadoon.
Shane McPherson as Jeff Douglas
returns to the main stage following
his acclaimed performance as The
Scarecrow in L. Frank Baum's The
Wizard of Oz. Returning to Huron
Country Playhouse for another sea-
son are Judith Bean, Kyle Blair,
