Exeter Bantams capture league title
The hardball team next travels to
Wallaceburg for the Labor Day
weekend OBA 'C' championship
EXETER - The Exeter Bantam hardball team
showed they were the class of the Western Ontario
league by winning the final tournament they hosted
on the weekend. -
Exeter polished off Mitchell in the final 7-4, the
team that handed them their only defeat of the tour-
nament in game four 11-8.
Nick Regier started on the mound for Exeter but
pitched only two innings because he put in a com-
plete game in Exeter's 6-5 semi-final,win over Han-
over. Ben Duskocy threw four. innings. in relief with
Mike Scip finishing the last inning. ' . ;
"We put in our strongest line-up," assistant coach
Mike Watt said, explaining the different between
the final win and the earlier loss to•Mitchell:
The victory hinged on two big plays: left -fielder
Brad Bakermade a great throw to home on a deep
hit to catch a Mitchell runner at home for the:third
:out tif an' inning; Regier swatted a three -run triple in
. the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and later
Scored himself. Mitchell -,scored a, run in their last at
hat but it was too little too late.
In earlieraction, Eiceter.whipped Fleisherton 8-4,
starting pitcher Tim Masse going four innings with
• Ryan_Parker and Scott Skinner sharing relief duties.
Exeter doubled Hanover 6-3 in their next game.
"They are a team we have a real rivalry with."
Watt .said, with ,five match -ups- during the season .
-adding fuel to the competitive fire. Regier went -3 -
for -4 at the Plate 'and pitched- four innings for the
win. Packer pitched three innings in relief.
The nail-hiter of the tournament was Exeter's next
game versus Owen Sound. Exeter slipped by the
other top team in the league 9-8. •
"(Owen Sound) was_a team that really thumped us
last year." Watt said. "It was a seesaw game .with
the lead changing hands three times." •
Exeter had a big fourth inning. scoring five runs
and held a 9-5„lead going into the bottom of the
sixth. Owen Sound scratched hack to withing a run
but Exeter closer Mark Bilinsky shut the door in his
one and two thirds innings.
• ';He .hadn't pitched in a while," Watt said. "His
performance..in shutting them down was key to the
win."
The key play in the; balance team 'effort was a
great throw from right -fielder Ben Debus in the hot -
tom of the sixth, Watt said. Debus caught a long Ily
for the second out of the inning. then threw a rocket .
to home to catch an Owen Sound runner tagging up
for the third out.
The loss to Mitchell in game four- Sunday morn-
ing was . the resuk of the fallout from Saturday .
night's thriller versus Owen Sound. Watt said. Exet-
er had pounded Mitchell three times this season.and
underestiinated them.
"They played. well and we hadn't got hack to the -
intensity level of Saturday evening. We .took them
lightly and you.cannot do that:"
Regier's complete game in the semi-final 6-5 wi▪ n
over Hanover was one of the tournament highlights. --
"Nick did .a good job pitching._" Watt said. "And
Mike Seip brought in some key runs.'11'was a real.
screaming match between the fans. It"was a well
played ball game.."" • /
Exetet's overall record to date is 30-3.
,Exeter moves on to the Ontario Baseball Associa-
tion 'C" final tournament . in •Wallacehurg on the
weekend.

Exeter controlled the rain -soaked
hall in the tirst_hall with some ex-
. cellent passing but didn't manage
many shots on'net. The defence
marked their men well and played
aggressively to keep the horneteam

Exeter in the second half but keeper.
Ryan- Hern stood his ground to
come up with some spectacular
saves.
Fury spokesperson Jason McFalls
said the the game became rough as
the Assyrians became frustrated by
the Fury's defensive style. London
evened the score when Fury cover-
age broke down for a moment.
"That was our best team effort of
• the year." McFalls said. "Everyone
played a strong game. Even our
coach Jeff Playfoot played a few
solid minutes in -his first game in
three years."
The Fury lost to Morningstar last
week 4-(1 The score was 0-0 at
half-time with Exeter having the
hest chances to score. Pete McAl-
lister walked in on the opposing
