Festival's Oedipus Rex a gripping drama

STRATFORD - The best thing
about the Stratford Festival's Oed-
ipus Rex was the part ..no one ex-
pccted. ' The play, ':penned by Sophocles
—and adapted-hy-WEB—Yeats,--is`cot
sidercd the greatest of all ancient
-. Greek tragedies. Greek tragedies
aren't everyone's- cup of ,tea — a
Gilbert, and Sullivan musical they
are not.
But for. those who appreciate a
classic morality ' tale - and per-
formances that have more to do
with voices of suhstancc than trap-
pings, Stratford's .Oedipus, which
opened in the Festival Theatre on
Friday, delivers a potent .theatrical
punch.
Not that there. aren't beautiful,
enthralling trappings — the cos-
tumes and masks are mesmerizing.

=Oedipus. played with great tragic
zeal by Benedict Campbell, is es-
pecially spellbinding — he seems
to glide -effortlessly across the stage
while _delivering the sonic drama:

of former Thebes .King Laius and
Queen Jocasta, Oedipus was sent
..away by Laius as a- babe, his feet
pierced and bound with a rope; to
avoid the Sphinx's prophecy •
that he would be killed by his ow.li
son who would wind up married to
Jocasta. A slave charged with dis-
posing of Oedipus takes pity on the

able to have children. Not knowing
his true heritage, Oedipus hears
. from a drun'k stranger that he is not
his f'ather's son while out on the
town. Now shaken and traveling to
Thebes from an unsatisfying trip to
the oracle' in Delphi, he encounters
,Laius and his party- who don't let
Juni pass. In a tit of rage. -Oedipus
. kills his father and and all but -one
of his party. Later as king and still
in the dark about his true heritage.
Oedipus unwittingly- seals his own
late by trying, and succeeding, to
find Laius' murderer.
While Oedipus Rex is delivered'
line style. it is the surprise 'Sa-
tyr' (no doubt a play on words -and
spelling) play that proceeded Oed-
ipus that Iclt thclasting impression:
Satires- are the total opposite of
tragedies - they are•silly, festive,
baudy renderings Of the tragedies.
Offered as an experiment,.the 'Sa-
tyr' play acted as'a preface tit Oed-
•
ipus; recounting how Oedipus was..
born and became king:Every char-
acter in .the long skit is decked out
in red noses anti mimics the one
• they will play in the tragedy, camp
ing it up to the max.
"Don't mess with your mama,"
the chani goes up near the end of
the : half-hour king Satyr; "Don't
dump on your dad; don't throw out
• the kid or things could get had."
The Oedipus 'Satyr'is perhaps '
the most absurd and fabulous piece
of satirical theatre this reviewer has
ever seen, worth the price of admis-
sion alone. But stick around for the
tragedy. - Both arc highly rec-
ommended. -
