"Quite often it's a matter 'of us
being a mediator," said DcVries
adding, "We • never have turned
anyone down."
The service is also a support sys-
tem for parents who are ex-
periencing difficulty with children
over the age of 16. According to
counsellor Shannon Dougherty,
. approximately one quarter of the
calls are an immediate crisis. Of-
ten the problem can be dealt with
over the • phone and -many issues
arc what she describes as "normal.
adolescent turmoil." -
Dougherty says .its -difficult to
know Safe Homes' success rate be-
cause of confidentiality but- she
feels the program stakes a dif7er-
encc•hy keeping kids from Jnoving
to larger centres like 1.imdon and
living on the streets: She adds pro-
viding some insight, into how a
healthy family functions can • also
help give teens hope and prevent
long -terns behavioral problems.
- Children are sometimes referred
to Safe Homes by the pollee who

streets.
"I think we have a great working
relationship with the OPP," said
Dougherty, adding, detachment of-
fices are often used as a safe place
for counsellors to initially incet
with teens experiencing problems.
DcVries has found experience
of being involved with Safe Homes
has been very rewarding. Often
children who experience difficulty
at this age are later able to contrib-
ute to -their community.
Safe Homes tries to keep a high
profile in the county's secondary
schools where counsellors work
closely with guidance departments,
principals. vice -principals and peer
mentors. They. also post Safe
Home_ flyers in -the high schools
and regularly attend information
fairs.
There- is a county -wide need for
more safe home faimlies. especially
in the -central and north area.of Hu-

Parkinson's Disease is caused by the Toss of
brain cells 'producing dopamine, an important
brain chemical. A special protein has been dis-
covered that when implanted in the brain can
help regenerate damaged dopamine -producing
cells. It s early in the research but there's hope
that this procedure will reverse the disease in
Parkinson's patients.
Wearing glasses can reduce the levels of airborne eye irritants
that make life uncomfortable for persons allergic to pollen. In
England, a company has produced glasses which pump air be-
tween the glasses and the eye. This has resulted in even Tess
problems with pollen.
Some women experiencing the hot flashes of menopause are
trying soy products to counter this uncomfortable symptom. Soy
products contain isoflavones (touted as natural plant estrogens)
which can have positive effects. Some products to try include
soy milk, tofu and roasted soy nuts.
We know that flossing our teeth is a good thing. But what about
our children? It's recommended that parents floss their chil-
dren's teeth from the age of 1 and 1/2 to about age 8 at which
time they can carry on themselves.
