Unique job search
course offered in
Huron County
Graduates of the two-week course have an
80 per cent success rate of finding jobs.
By Kate Monk • ,
T -A Reporter.
CLINTON•
- Eightyr cent of
job openings are not". publicized;
only 20 per cent are advertised in
newspapers or posted at employ-
ment centers. However. 80 per cent
of the people searching for jobs,
only use the traditional techniques.
that give them knowledge of 20 per
cent of the jobs. This 80/20 rule is
the basis for a unique . job -search
course called Just 1)o It.
"There's nothing like it offered
anywhere." said Mary Stover the
Huron Employment Liaison Pro-
gram general manager in Clinton.
Stover developedthe concept for -
the course last year because there
was a gap in client services. •
. ."People who had a professional
resume as well as job skills and had
'done a traditional job search were
sellors at the Huron Employtnent
Resource Centers can refer ap-
plicants to the course facilitator. To
pe he eligible for the course. ap-
plicants must meet the following
criteria:
1. Clear job objective
- 2. Professional resume
:-3. Knowledge of cover letters and
interview skills
4. Must be motivated to par-
ticipate in a group' process and ac-
tive involvement in •a job search
and • •
5. Committed to 10 full days.
There is no cost for participants.
Patterson and Kim DePutter fa-
cilitate .the intensive course which -
includes in -class instruction in the
mornings. giving participants the
afternoons to network with po-
tential employers and attend _ in=
formation interviews. : - •-
- Both Stover and current course
still unsuccessful in finding jobs. participants credit Patterson and
. said Stover.
The Just Do It course teaches the
process of a job search in a group.
environment and is "a step deeper
than resume and interview skill_
.courses. it gives participants the
tools to access jobs not advertised.
Stover contracted Debbie Patter-
son. -an employment counsellor
• from near Dashwood to .develop
and teach the unique course: Except
for June. the 10 -day course has
been offered monthly since
cember at the HELP.office in Clin-
ton.
"It has been really well-received
- in the community," claimed Stover, •
adding more than 80- per cern of the
course graduates find jobs.
Anyone in Huron County can ap-
ply to attend the course. Coun-
DePutter for making the course
such a success.
"They arc excellent, facilitators."
said Stover.
. Seven people are in the second
week of this month's course. They
said the facilitators have been "top
rate" and the group environment
has helped with networking and
confidence -building.
Stover encourages people to take
Just Do 1t as soon as possible after
becoming unemployed.
"The sooner you become active
looking for work, the better your
chances. You've got to take per-
sonal. responsibility, be motivated
and ready to find work. You have
to believe in yourself."
The next Just Do It course is u-
gust 18 - 29.
