ness, this negative feeling can last
• for days or even weeks. Depression
is an illness which is common and
often misunderstood. At any one
time approximately one in four
women and one in 10 men in Cana-
da suffers from depression. Depres-
sion is not the result of a personal
failure or weakness. It affects men
and women from every walk of
life, both young and old. •-
Some individuals suffering from
depression also experience mania.
Mania is a condition in which the
signs and symptoms are almost op-
posite to that depression. Such indi-
viduals may feel full of energy, ex •

perience rapid unpredictable
emotional changes and racing
thoughts. The mood swings from
depression to mania is known as
manic depression.
