Bishop is high.

T -A Reporter •
:GRAND BEND - With stories of
scandal in today's military. a play
about a Canadian war hero is re-
freshing. Billy Bishop Goes to War
at the Huron Country Playhoiuse
'celebrates the efforts of Ontario na-
tivc, Billy Bishop.
David . Nairn directs the play
whit;h features P. Robert Hughes as
Billy Bishop 'and Stephen Wood-,
Jetts as the narrator/pianist.
The play is' the story of World
War- I flying ace. Billy Bishop
(originally from Owen Sound. On-
• tario), and his missions in the skies
. over Europe. This one-man play
follows Bishop through his ad-
- olescencc — when he joins the
Cavalry and then moves to, the Roy-
al Flying Corps — to his final mis-
sion and the accolades he receives
for the 72 enemy planes he downed
during combat.
Hughes ,conquers the cornucopia
of characters (17 in all). Combined
with John Gray's blend of melodies
and lyrics, the audience is moved
through the full range of emotions,
from laughter to tears as Bishop ex-
periences exhilaration, loneliness
and fright. . •
Hughes and Woodjetts work well
together. particularly in song.
Hughes maintains a strong pact
throughout the two-hour per-
formance while Woodjetts comple-
ments Hughes characters -and adds
spice to the play.
