Lucanites get a bang on Canada Day LUCAN - Residents here know how to get a bang out of Canada Day. A community fireworks display was one of -many events Lucanites enjoyed in celebration of Canada's 130th birthday last week. Families brought a few fire- works themselves while Lu- can-Biddulph firefighters had the honor of lighting the fireworks. Other events included a bike parade from Elm St. Park to the community centre, children's activi- ties, cake cutting and flag raising and the Canada Contest that tested Gr. 6-8 Lucan/Biddulph students' knowledge of Canada. The top three teams of the seven participating won cash prizes. The win- ners were: first -Denise Dobble, Dan Roberson; second -Lisa Whitehead, Derek Lucier, Dan Rober- son; third -Shane DeJong, Ryan Nickles, Josh Kleusk- ens. Winners of the best dec- orated bike contest (in de- scending order): tots - Jaclyn and Jocelyn Gates, Michael Beaver, Nathan Butler; Gr. 1/2 -Shane Av- dovich, Peter Dueck, Kalyn Kraul; Gr. 3/4 -Kristina But- ler, Jenny Bieber, Jeremy Ansens; Gr. 5 to 8- Jennl Holland, Brent AvJ vich, Melissa Melanson. Canada Day Celebration - a rip-roaring success! EXETER - Canada Day Celebration com- mittee chairperson Liz McAuslan de-, scribed July 1 as wonderful day, despite a few rain showers. "From my point of view it was a rip- roaring success!" she exclaimed, still ex- uberant from all the positive feedback. At the peak period of the day, during the car show, children's entertainment and chili cook -off, more than 1,200 people gathered at the South Huron Recreation Centre to celebrate Canada's 130th birth- day. McAuslan said the Roast Beef Dinner was a sell-out and organizers expect to top last year's fundraising effort of $1,600 which is reinvested in the community through do- nations, as well as in the annual Fall Fair. Although the number of teams entered in this year's chili cook -off dropped from more than 10 to seven, organizers attribute the low turn -out to a Tuesday holiday. Many companies opted to give employees Monday off rather than Tuesday. More than 500 people were served breakfast by the Exeter and Area and Ste- phen Township firefighters. Funds shared by the Legion with the firehalls will be put into a reserve fund for the purchase of equipment as needed. The Vintage Car Show was considered a tremendous success with more than 100 entries In its first year. As always, the dunk tanks proved to be a popular activity and well-known local figures including Mayor Ben Hoogenboom and Fire Chief John Morgan were good sports about getting wet. The weather held for a well -attended fire- works display by the firefighters at•the Ex- eter Ball Diamonds. Beach Volleyball The winning team for beach volleyball in- cluded Joan Sararas, Steve Sararas, Dwayne Overholt and Jodi Overholt.
