A community fireworks
display was one of -many
events Lucanites enjoyed
in celebration of Canada's
130th birthday last week.

works themselves while Lu-
can-Biddulph firefighters
had the honor of lighting
the fireworks.
Other events included a
bike parade from Elm St.
Park to the community
centre, children's activi-
ties, cake cutting and flag
raising and the Canada

Canada Day Celebration -
a rip-roaring success!
EXETER - Canada Day Celebration com-
mittee chairperson Liz McAuslan de-,
scribed July 1 as wonderful day, despite a
few rain showers.
"From my point of view it was a rip-
roaring success!" she exclaimed, still ex-
uberant from all the positive feedback.
At the peak period of the day, during the
car show, children's entertainment and
chili cook -off, more than 1,200 people
gathered at the South Huron Recreation
Centre to celebrate Canada's 130th birth-
day.
McAuslan said the Roast Beef Dinner was
a sell-out and organizers expect to top last
year's fundraising effort of $1,600 which is
reinvested in the community through do-
nations, as well as in the annual Fall Fair.
Although the number of teams entered in
this year's chili cook -off dropped from
more than 10 to seven, organizers attribute
the low turn -out to a Tuesday holiday.
Many companies opted to give employees
Monday off rather than Tuesday.
More than 500 people were served
breakfast by the Exeter and Area and Ste-
phen Township firefighters. Funds shared
by the Legion with the firehalls will be put
into a reserve fund for the purchase of
equipment as needed.
The Vintage Car Show was considered a
tremendous success with more than 100
entries In its first year. As always, the dunk
tanks proved to be a popular activity and
well-known local figures including Mayor
Ben Hoogenboom and Fire Chief John
Morgan were good sports about getting
wet.
The weather held for a well -attended fire-
works display by the firefighters at•the Ex-
eter Ball Diamonds.
