Hay Township
fanuli!ywelcomes
Austrian student
By Heather Mir
T -A Reporter
HAY TOWNSHIP - Patty Webber, her husband Doug and children Bri-
anne and Brian are eagerly anticipating a four-week visit from Austrian
student, Eva Maria Wagner who will be living with them as part of an
AFS Interculture Canada exchange.
Through an article in a county -wide newspaper,. Patty learned of the pro-
gram that offers foreign students English as a Second Language classes
She had always been interested in participating in an exchange program
but was hesitant to make a year-long commitment. The four-week AFS
summer program seemed like a great way to test the waters before signing
up for a longer exchange.
As a parent, Patty believes the exposure to an older student (Eva in 17)
who speaks four languages will be a learning experience for her 14 -year-
old daughter and eight-year-old son.
"We thought we could (earn about her country and her culture," said Pat-
ty, adding the whole family is looking forward to the visit.
Eva will be staying with the Webbers between July 24 and August 22.
She is part of a group of students from Austria, Italy and the Dominican
Republic who are visitng Huron County for a month this summer. They
will take English classes in Clinton for three hours each weekday morning
and will also participate in afternoon programs
that include outdoor and cultural activities.
Families arc needed to host seven teenages
between the ages of 16 and 18 this summer.
They are expected to provide a safe, comfort-
able home environment, a regular family ex-
perience, meals and assistance with tranporta-
tion between classes and activities.
The Webbers anticipate their time with Eva
will be short because of the time spent in classes but they hope to show
her much of Huron County, the lakeshore and plan to visit the Zurich
Bean Festival in August. As a group the students will take part in a week-
end trip to Niagara Falls and Toronto.
Although Eva is from a rural area, she is an only child and being part of
a larger family will be a new experience.
Anyone interested in hosting a student or receiving more informatiot
can contact Joanne Rainmaker at 482-9948.
