AIR TIONEDO
Discussed by Zurich council.
Citizens Naves, August 20, 1951
Early night marauders hit Zurich
"Nightly entertainment"
was ,the topic of two
discussions at Zurich council
Thursday.
Phil ERb spoke to council
about an empty house next to
his home.
About dusk, Erb said , bats
begin issuing from an
upstaris window. On oc-
casion, Erb said he had
counted over 200 bats.
There is also an old well on
the same property and the
"top is shot" Erb said. He
felt it could be a hazard to
the children of the neigh-
borhood.
He said he thought the well
had been partially filled at
one time, but it looked to him
to he 12 to 15 feet deep and
still held some water.
The house on Main Street,
east, is said to be completely
gutted and is owned by a
"gentleman from London".
Councillor Bob Fisher said
council should pass a
resolution giving the owner a
deadline to clean it up or the
village would do the work
and bill the owner.
• "If we don't have this
authority as an elected body,
we might as well quit,"
Fisher stated.
Councillor Isidore Laporte
quipped that bats were good
for man and kept insects in
check. Get rid of all the bats
he joked and first thing you
know you'll be swarmed with
flys.
A council member
suggested a spray or moth-
balls, but Clerk Sharon
Baker wondered where the

Actors prep in barn
for next performance
Actors often complain that
their rehearsal halls are as
drafty as barns, but not
many have as much reason
as the cast of He Won't Come
In From The Born, which runs
August 25 to September 5 at
the Blyth Summer Festival
with the assistance of
Goderich Elevators, Ltd.
The actors in H. Won't
Come In From The Ram are
picking up a little local at-
mosphere (the source of the
atmosphere is not specified)
by rehearsing the play in a
barn not far from Blyth.
"I wanted the actors to ab-
sorb the essence of rural
living." director Paul
Thompson says, "We took a
straw vote and everyone
agreed we should hit the
hay, so to speak."
Author and star performer
of the play, Ted Johns, sums
up the reason for the play by
quoting from it: "Farmers
are like mushrooms.
They're kept in the dark and
they're fed manure.'Anyone
who's brave or foolhardy
enough to learn to be a
farmer these days would be
well off to do it on the safety
of a stage."
He Won't Come In From The
Born is a revival of the hit
that played to sold -out
houses in Toronto and in a
two week run at Blyth
Summer Festival in 1977.
The show features Ted Johns
as both actor and writer in
this farcical treatment of
the troubles of a• -modern age
farmer who retreats to his
barn in protest.
The same hard-hitting and
hilarious satire that
characterized Johns' The
School Scandal and St. Sam
of the Nuke Pile is turned on
astronomical interest rates,
'government regulations,
plummeting returns on farm
products and rising supply
prices.
The cast includes Johns'
as the recalcitrant farmer
who takes up residence In his
barn, and Janet Amos, as his
wife. Ms. Amos is artistic
director of the Blyth
Summer Festival and is the
wife of Mr. Johns' in reality
as well as on stage. William
Dunlop, Graham McPherson
and Keith Thomas fill out
the cast.
Although some perfor-
mances are already sold out,
there are still plenty of good
seats available. He Won't
Come In From The Rare runs
every night except Sunday at
8:30 p.m. from August 25 to
September 5 with matinees
at 2 p.m. on September 3 and
5. Seats may be reserved by
calling the Festival at (519)
523-9300, 523-9225, or in per-
son at the Festival box of-
fice.

bats would go if they were
simply chased out of the
house.
Council made a resolution
and will draft a letter
requesting the owner clean
up the house by September
first or council will have the
work done.
Squeelling tires and a
police siren woke Zurich
residents about 4:30
Saturday morning, August 8.
Councillor Fisher won-
dered who would pay for a
tree damaged by the police
cruiser while maneuvering
to pursue hot-rodders.
He also said he though the
police siren was only to be
used in emergency
situations.
Laporte said he un-
derstood it was also to be
used when chasing suspects.
Dan Turkheini noted that
it was good to hear the siren
as it showed somebody was
on the job.
Reeve Fred Haberer
agreed saying he was able to
get to sleep after he heard
the siren:
Council discussed the
situation in an incamera
session.
A letter will be sent to the
OPP thanking them for
sending someone out to in-
vestigate the situation. The
village will absorb the cost of
the damaged tree.
The council passed a
resolution allowing the bean
festival to close village roads
to traffic on August 22.
The roads closed are :
Goshen Street from the post
office to highway 84, Mill
Street from Frederick Street
to Goshen, Victoria Street
from Highway 84 to
Rosalie, and highway 84
from Goshen to John Street
South.
In other business:
Council passed a bylaw
appointing the clerk as a
lottery licensing officer.
A second bylaw to for-
malize council's permission
to hold sports and games on
Sunday was scrapped.
Councilors felt sports were
held without the bylaw and
shouldn't be limited by it.
Council meetings may be
changed from Thursday to
Wednesday nights in the fall
to allow the clerk to take a
Pogo 11
Thursday night course at
Fanshawe College. Council
will set the new date at the
September meeting.
