What to watch on siding
The Ontario Ministry of
Congumer and Commercial
Relations warns
homeowners to know exactly
what they want before con-
tacting siding companies.
Although aluminum is pop-
ular, siding is also available
in steel, vinyl and wood. If
you're unsure about what to
use, examine your reasons
for wanting siding. For ex-
ample, if you don't want to
spend a lot of time on
maintenance, choose a
material that doesn't re-
quire regular washing, pain-
ting or staining.
Most manufacturers
publish pamphlets describ-
ing their products. Write the
companies or pick up copies
at the local hardware or
building supply store. Do-
it-yourselfers can pick up ex-
tra tips at the public library.
It's important to shop
around. Get at least three
detailed written estimates
that include a price
breakdown for all the work:
cost of siding, installation,
labour, after-sales services
and any additional work,
such as installing new
eavestroughing.
Ask for references and
check them out. Also check
the companies' reputation
through your local Chamber
of Commerce and the Better
Business Bureau.
Make sure you understand
a contract before signing it.
Under The Consumer
Protection Act, executory
contracts (where the
purchase price is over $50
and the delivery of goods or
services is to take place at a
future date) must include:
• the names and addresses of
buyer and seller;
• a detailed description and
itemized price list of goods
and services;
• a detailed statement of
how you will pay for the
work;
• any guarantee or warranty
on goods and services.
Siding manufacturers
usually guarantee their
products against defects.
Although they vary, most
metal sidings carry a 20 -
year warranty. Others are
pro -rated so the amount the
manufacturer will pay for
the product's replacement
decreases each year. In
either case, the warranty
doesn't cover defects caused
by physical damage or mis-
takes in application.
You should also know what
the guarantee on the finish
covers. Some types of siding
are not guaranteed against
normal fading, chalking or
pollution, the most frequent
causes of siding damage.
Other warranties require the
owner to provide necessary
maintenance when required
to maintain warranty
protection. Find out also if
the warranty is tranferrable
to a subsequent owner
should you sell your home.
For more information
about siding write to the
Consumer Information Cen-
tre, Ontario Ministry of Con-
sumer and Commercial
Relations, 555 Yonge St.,
Toronto, Ont., M7A 2H6 and
ask for a free pamphlet
called: Siding: how to get
your money's worth.
