Service, dinner
honors refugees
Gordon Hill, Anna Keys
and Joyce Dowson,
members of the Varna -
Goshen Refugee Committee
took part in a special church
service on June 14. Rev.
Norman Pick was the guest
Varna
by Mary Camino11
preacher, and special music
was "Amazing Grace" sung
by Hiep Nguyen and "Ex-
odus" by Peter Postill.
A barbecue and party was
held in the church sheds
honouring the Nguyen fami-
ly who are moving to Huron
Park the beginning of July.
Gordon expressed his ap-
preciation to all who had
helped, especially those who
had driven them to work in
the early morning. Each
committee member spoke,
expressing their delight at
working with the family.
Ivan McClymont, Geraldine
Eckel, Rev. Wilena Brown
and Anson McKinley were
the other committee
members. Gifts of books on
Canada and photo albums
containing pictures of the
party were presented to Hai
and to Thai and Hiep and
their family. Rev. Wilena
Brown presented Gordon
with a Certificate of
Recognition for his
leadership and efforts on
behalf of the family. Hiep
expressed their feeling of be-
ing part of the Varna -Goshen
family, and hope to visit as
sons and daughters, brothers
and sisters visit their
families. Carol Simons ex-
pressed her joy in working
with Hiep for the Board of
Education.
Thai and Hiep both have
their driver's license and
have bought a car, and Hai
has purchased a motorcycle.
The men are working at
Huron Park and the boys
have done well at school.
A chocolate cake
representing the dark and
dangerous conditions the
Nguyens fled from was serv-
ed, and a light cake
represented brightness and
hope for the future.
Cubs, scouts family barbecue
On Saturday evenings, the
Bayfield Cubs and Scouts
wound up their year with a
family barbecue.
Ian Siertsema was first,
and Jon Leppington and
Darryn McAsh (first-year
cub) came second and third
in accumulating the most
performance points over•the'
past year.
The boys had fun putting
on a skit where they manag-
ed to get some of their
fathers pretty wet.
Bobbi -Jo Leppington tied
with Sheila Lindsay for most
(
performance points in the
Brownie Pack. Their final
meeting was a mother and
daughter banquet at
Bayfield United Church on
Thursday evening. Well
done, kids!
Couple travels by bus
Ruth and Murdock
Morrison have had some
very interesting bus trips
recently. They spent a
weekend at Cuyahoga Falls,
Ohio where they attended
the twenty-third anniversary
of the Cathedral of
Tomorrow. Rex Humbard
and his family were present
for this special occasion.
A most enjoyable holdiay
was spent at the Scott Farm
Resort at Oquaga Lake in
New York State, where
there was recreation and
entertainment to suit
everybody. On the way down
they visited the famous Cor-
ning Glass Works.
They also went on an
afternoon bus trip to the Big
Creek Boat Farm at
Caledonia on the Grand
River, and enjoyed a cruise
and dinner on the Grand
River Belle. This was
followed by films of many
places on the Grand River
as it flows through to Lake
Erie. There is a bake shop,
craft shop and dining room
where entertainment and
meals are provided. Another
highlight of their travels was
a trip to Hamilton to see the
Geritol Follies at Hamilton
Place. They had time to shop
at Jackson Mall and had
dinner at the Y.W.C.A.
Varna Slo-pitch
In the Slo-pitch tourna-
ment at Kirkton on the
weekend, the Stanley
Steamers won 10-8 in their
game against Stratford, and
15-5 over New Hamburg on
Saturday. They were
defeated 15-3 by Hamilton on
Sunday in the semi-finals.
Recreation committee
members are reminded of
their meeting on Tuesday
June 30 at 8:30. -
Camping adventures
There was more than
fishing to cause a little ex-
citement for Bill Chessell
and brother-in-law Don
Riehl on our first night in
camp at Powassan a week
ago. A man was heard call-
ing, from acrossthe river at
10:00 at night, that he was
lost. They went over and
picked him up, then got the
camp owner out of bed to
return him to his car,which
had a dead battery. Instead
of following the road to a
farmhouse, he had
attempted to go across
heavily wooded ravines and
become hopelessly lost until
he came out in a meadow
from where he could see the
camp lights. The man was a
new employee of the
township, and not familiar
with the area.
