The Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food is
again sponsoring the Junior
Agriculturalist Program
which is now in its ninth
year. The program has been
very successful in providing
a practical learning ex-
perience for young people
from non-farm homes who
have a serious interest in
agriculture, and no ex-
perience working on a farm.
As a result, there are now
a group of young people
interested in and capable of
pursuing agricultural
related careers or farm
labour positions. As well, the
_Junior Agriculturalists, their
families and friends have
developed a greater
awareness and appreciation
of rural life and the farming
industry.
Host farmers are to
operate a commercial farm
and to be engaged full time
in farming. Selection of host
farmers will be based on
their interest in helping an
inexperienced young person
develop skills required on a
farm and on their ability to
work well with and supervise
young people. It is an ideal
opportunity for farmers to
share their knowledge of
agriculture with " urban
youth.
Junior Agriculturalists are
16 or 17 years of age and
must have had no previous
farm experience. Par-
ticipants are selected on
their reasons for being in-
terested in farming and
future education and career
plans. The program gives
these students an op-
portunity to develop an
appreciation for rural life
through living with a farm,
family and through par-
ticipating in local 4-H, Junior
Farmer and other com-
munity activities.
The on-farm assignments
last from June 22 to August
22. Each Junior
Agriculturalist will receive a
training allowance of $18.00
per day. The Host Farmer
will pay $6.00 in cash and
supply rooni and board
worth $6.00 per day. The
The `Agricrew experience'
What do you get when you
have four enthusiastic young
people and mix them with
various types of farm work
and add lots of fun? Why you
get an experience, an
"Agricrew experience."
Once again Agricrew is
being offered throughout the
province as an Experience
'81 program and plans are
well under way for another
successful year in the Huron -
Perth region.
Agricrew, in it's fourth
year is going to be run much
the same way as last year
with three crews in the
Huron -Perth region, each
crew consisting of one
foreman and three
crewmembers. The four
person team will be made up
of students between the ages
of 15 and 21, all of whom have
had some previous farm
experience.
What can Agricrew do for
you? Well the objective of
the program is to aid far-
mers who need help with
harvesting or have jobs to be
done but can't find the time
due to seasonal harvest.
Agricrews are capable of
pretty well any job and in
previous years have worked
at painting, fencing, haying,
picking stones, piing wood,
general clean-up and some
first storey construction to
mention a few. Agricultural
societies may also hire
Agricrew to help set up for a
local fair.
The three crews in Huron -
Perth will begin work June
22 and work eight weeks
finishing on August 15. The
crews, which provide their
own transportation, will be
working at various farms
throughout the summer.
Farmers may hire a crew for
any number of days up to a
maximum of five days
during the summer. For a
very reasonable price far-
mers receive "eight hours of
work from four energetic
students. Why not hire an
Agricrew this summer!
