the loss of portable
classrooms would severly
hamper the education
process.
In most rural schools, one
classroom was converted to•
a library resource centre
and a portable was -added to
offset the ._classroom less.
Cochrane addtd that the es-
tablishment of special
education programs has also
necessitated' the use of por-
table classrooms.
The loss • ofportables
would have relegated some
special education classes to
storerooms and staff rooms
at the schools. The board
also discussed the possibility
of buying used portable
classrooms but will wait for
a decision on the appeal.
The management com-
mittee of the Hilton County
Board of Education will
meet with representatives of
the Huron School Bus Con-
tractors Association this
month to hammer out a new
contract.
In a report to the board
Thursday, the management
committee indicated their
was a problem with the bus
contract renewal and the
contractor's association had
• requested the special
meeting. ,
• The problems with the bus
contract was reported in
committee of the whole.
The management com-
mittee was also authorized
to proceed•with the hiring of
two full-time painters to be
added to the central office
maintenance crew. The ad-
ditional staff will look after
painting requirements in all
county schools.

education
Education was the theme
of the May W,omen's
Institute meeting held in the
Hay Township Hall. Mrs. H.
Smith; Mrs. H. Thiel and
Mrs. C. Gelinas were the
committee in charge with
Mrs. Thiel as chairlady.
Mrs. Gelinas was unable to
be . present. The meeting
opened with the inji 4ure
carol and the Mary Stewart
Collect. Mrs. V Dinnin was
pianist.
Mrs. Thiel read an article
on the handicapped compiled
by Mrs. Shirley Haggerty of
Clinton who attends. the day
care centre at Huronview.
One out of 10 adults are
handicapped. Most han-.
dicapped persons want to be
independent but only 10 per-
cent are. It costs $35,000 a
year to keep a handicapped
person in an institution.
Mrs. Smith read a few
poems from an old school
book.
Mrs. Thiel read another
article from the War Cry
about a man who spent one
hour in a wheelchair and the
difficulties he encountered
trying to get to work. There
are not enough ramps and
wide doorways and too many
curbs for the handicapped in
a wheelchair.
