Kenneth Knlght conducted service in Cannel Presbyterian Church on Sunday, speaking. on the . subject"The Vocation. of Parents.'' The Sunday School children were in attendance ht the service,. Hensall Berths'IdGregor and gave readings on "Mother", "Mother's Love" and sang "A Song for Mother." They were spoken to by Rev Knight about childhood and honouring your :mother. The choir, under the direction of Mrs. Taylor, sang "Faith of our Mother's". Choir. practise will be held on Wednesday evening at 8. The last practise for the anniversary is on Sunday , May 17 at 11 a.m. when Jack Burghardt will be the guest speaker. Mr. and Mrs. Lobb of Clinton will assist in the music of the service. Plan to attend this service. • Sunday May 24 the IOOF and Rebekah Lodges will attend worship in Carmel church. United Church In spite of overcast skies and threatening rain, the Hensall United Church and District committee for Senior Citizen Housing held a very successful rummage, auction and bake sale raising a sizeable total from the three events. This will make a fine foundation from which to launch a campaign fund for necessary preliminary expenses. The Committee wishes to thank all who helped at the combined sale. Hensall United Church was beautifully decorated with spring flowers donated from the garden of Mrs. Mary Haugh, Brucefield for Christian Family Sunday, May 10, Mother's Day. Sunday -school was cancelled so that families could worship together. The children's talk was on the comforting presence of a mother. Rev. Stanley McDonald took as his text "Honour Thy Father and thy Mother." and spoke on the challenge of belonging to a Christian family, the parents responsibilities being to raise the children in love and security, to be a good example and to be a good influence. The children must also be responsible; and reverent and honour their parents and follow the example they set. The choir anthem, "No Man is an Island" by Whitney -Cramer, was sung meaningfully and applauded by the congregation. The choir was led by choir director Dr. Ralph Topp. The service was conducted on the theme "God is Here." First we come, second we listen and lastly, we respond. Special family hymns were sung through out the service. Welcoming at the front door were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stebbins and family. Ushers were Brian Beer and Steve Corbett. Next Sunday is Canadian Bible Society Sunday when Rev. Howlett of London will be. guest speaker. Unit 1 of the U.C.W. will be meeting on Thursday May 14 at 2 p.m. Carmel WMS The W.M.S. of Carmel Presbyterian Church met on Monday evening with Mrs. Marlene Bell presiding and opened with a poem on. Mother's Day. . Mrs. Kathy . Bell was in charge of the devotional and gave an interesting message on "God and His Purpose" after which she led in prayer. Mrs. Site gave a reading on "Unaware of the Son of God." The roll call was answered by the maiden name of your mother in full. An invitation was received to Caven Church, Exeter, on May 11, also a thankyou from the staff of Queensway. Mrs. Bell thanked all who helped at the Queensway. A card of thanks was also received from the Thomson family. Arrangements were also made for the birthday party June 1. The offering was received and dedicated by Mrs. Bell Mrs. Margaret Hoggarth presided for, the Ladies' Aid of Carmel church . and opened the meeting with two poems "How Welcome, Peae at S nset" and "At Sunset" and led in prayer. The minutes were read and business discussed. cu Mrs. Hoggarth thanked all who baked for the daffodil tea and bake sale. Mrs. Bell gave a report of the cards and treats and Mrs. Gertie Moir displayed the quilt the ladies .had just completed. Following refreshments served by Dorothy and Marg Hoggarth, Taylor the COLLECTABLE? =- Auctioneer Dick Van Patter offers one of the more unusual items at the Hensall United Church auction. The Saturday sale was held to raise funds for senior housing in Hensall. • Hensall church women study Korean church Unit IV U.C.W. The UCW meeting of Unit IV was held in the Fellowship Hall of Hensall United Church, Thursday, May 8 at 2:30 p.m. with Mrs. Nan Britton presiding. She opened the meeting with 12 important things to remember. and a hymn was sung. Mrs. Susan Purdy had charge of the devotional, reading portions from the book of Acts. She spoke of the Christian Cburch in South Korea and also stated partnership is vital and closed with prayer. Mrs. Nan Britton also spoke on partnership and said we can be blessed being with others, so we can receive as well as give. Following her reading she led in prayer. Rev Stanley McDonald presented the film "If I should die before I wake" depicting the terminally ill, our approach and com- munications. He led a discussion and closed with prayer. The roll call was answered by 14 members present. Mrs. Dorothy Mickle was secretary and pianist for the meeting. The treasurer, Mrs. Myrtle Sherritt gave a gratifying report of proceeds from the beef barbeque in April. Mrs. Gladys Coleman received the offering. The group was reminded about the bake sale at the Fiddler's Contest and the group is to provide and serve lunch at the general meeting in June. They are respon- sible for the flowers in the. church in May. Seventy-eight visits were made to the sick and shut-ins during the past two months. Mrs. Mary Roobol, card convener, reported eight Easter cards and one bir- thday care were sent. The program number was given by Mrs. Mary Roobol and she read two poems "Home and Mother" and "What is Prayer". The meeting closed with a hymn and prayer by Mrs. Britton. A social hour followed and lunch was served by Mrs. Pearl Shaddick, Mrs. Roobol and Mrs. Gladys Coleman. Hensall canvass .A canvass will be made.in Hensall for South Huron and District Mentally han- dicapped - distributing "Seeds of Hope". Proceeds for Huron Hope Nursery, Arc Industries, Eight apart- ments and residential ser- vices, rehabilitation for mentally handicapped. Volunteer canvassers are: Donna Allan, Iva Reid, Colleen Ferris, Beverly Hovius, Darlene Uyl, Beatrice Uyl, Ruth Knip, Irene Zwart, Alice Neilands, Linda Traquair and Messengers. Personals Mrs. Fran Siemon of Sonora California spent a pleasant holiday with- her mother Mrs. Annie Noakes and they also visited with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Noakes and family at Mt. Brydges. Kenneth Noakes and family Rebekahs meet Amber lodge met on Wednesday evening for the regular meeting Noble Grand Bertha MacGregor was assisted by the Vice Grand Gladys Coleman, who reported cards and treats sent to members. Mrs. Evelyn McBeathgave a report of the district meeting which she attended as representative in Brussels. The proceeds from the dessert euchre and bake sale were most gratifying. The IOOF and Rebekahs will attend worship in Carmel Presbyterian Church on May 24 at 10:15 a.m. The open installation will be held in the local hall on June 21 at 8 p.m. for the DDGM nominations followed. Lodge closed and refresh- ments were served by Irene Blackwell, Edith Bell and Leona Parke. from Hamilton and Waterdown were also visiting, wheh all enjoyed a real family get-together. Mrs. Don Gooding, Parkhill, Mrs. Fred John- ston and Andrew, Moosonee, were Sunday visitors with the former's mother Mrs. Mabel Munn. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Coghlin, and Mr. and Mrs. Chester Earl; and Judith, and Mrs. Carl McDonald visited on Sunday at the manse with Rev Stanley McDonald for family Sun- day. Mother's Day visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Pollock and Jane were Mrs. Edith Bell, Exeter; Mrs. Susie Pollock, Varna; Mrs. Shirley Passmore, Mike and Deb, London; Mrs. Betty Beaver, Paris; and Mr. and Mrs.. Gary Struyf, Thedford. Mr. and Mrs. VanDyke of Atwood visited Monday Mr. and Mrs. Sim Roobol. Sim Roobol is a patient in South Huron Hospital, Exeter. Mrs. Alice Ferg who was a patient in South Huron Hospital, Exeter returned to her home. Mrs. Bertha MacGregor was a representative at a one -day seminar held in Clinton last week under the direction of Myra Schriff, consultant from Environ- mental Psychology and social research, Toronto. The purpose of this meeting was to go through a series of excercises designed to help a community determine the extent to which its collective resources are adequately meeting the leisure needs of its older adults.
