Buckeyes, Has -beans share banquet

The Zurich Buckeyes and
:Has -beans hockey teams
held a joint awards night,
banquet and dance at the
Zurich arena Friday.
The buckeyes presented
team awards to: Gerald
Weido, .most valuable
Buckeye; Kerry Bedard,
most valuable player in the
playoffs; Dave Cyr for most
sportsmanlike conduct; Pat
Bedard, top scorer; and Kris
Bedard for rookie, of the
year.
The Buckeyes have been
South Huron Hockeyleague
champions for the past three
seasons, and were division
champs in 78-79, and 80-81.
They also won the Hensall
intermediate tournament in
78-79, and 80-81.
Formerly know as the
Zurich Flyers, they were
playoff champs for 70-71 and
71-72.
'At the SHHL awards ban-
quet April 24, Juergan
Hellman and Randy Oke
were named the overall top
league goaltenders in their
north diivision.
Gerald Weido received the
leagues most valuable
player award and teammate
Kerry Bedard was named
the league's most valuable
playoff player
The program for the ev-
ning thanked the cjub's spon-
sors and those who assisted
at the Buckeye games. The
program gave a special
thanks to club secretary
Elroy Desjardine and
trainer Carl Finkbeiner
According to the. program :
The Zurich Oldtimer
hockey team orginated at a
gathering of interested
players in Larry Merner's
recreation room in
midwinter of 1978-79.
The team played
whenever ice time• and
games could be arranged.
However, after this first
season true interest bloom-
ed.
A team executive was
chosen and an application
was submitted and accepted
by the Canadian Oldtimer's
Hockey Association. . The
team was accepted for the
79-80 season.
With this acceptance, it
was possible to contact the
play teams who were
members and be eligible to
enter tournaments. It was
then the team adopted its
logo and name "Hasbeans"
The team won the silver
medal at , its' first tourna-
ment in Wallaceburg in
Novefnber of 79. They were
also awarded the good
sportsmanship award.
This season's first venture
was the Great Lake's Tour-
nament played in London in
November. The team did not
place in the 36 team field.

another silver medal and
good sportsmanship sward
at a tournament in Goderich.
The . season's third • tourna-
ment was in Kincardine in
early April. It was a 12 team
event, and though the team
did not place, they again won
the good sportsmanship
trophy.
"We are still in search of a
gold metal. "The program
says. "Maybe next year!
However, we are extremely
proud of our good
sportsmanship awards, as
we feel this is what the game
is all about recreations, fun
and fellowship."

1981 Dog Tags are now available at the
Municipal Office at the following rate struc-
ture: 1st male or spayed female $4.00, 2nd
$8.00; 1st female $8.00, 2nd $12.00; 3rd of
either $50.00 and if not picked up by May
15th, 1981 the rate will be doubled to cover
costs.
