UC women hear speaker for vear
Three hundred women
from Huron and Perth coun-
ties gathered In Central
United Church in Stratford
on Monday evening, April 13
for the . United Church
Varna
by nary
Women's Presbyterial
fellowship meeting.
Six members of Varna and
Goshen attended.
.Presbyterial president
Ann Walters of Brucefield
welcomed the guests, and
Marj Gibson of Central
Church was the very capable
leader of the beautiful sing-
ing.
The first speaker was
Myron Angus of Rehandart,
who was born in St. Marys.
He has had no use of his
hands or feet since birth. He
is one of twenty on the On-
tario Advisory Council of the
Physically Handicapped
which advises the provincial
secretary for social develop-
ment on the needs of the han-
dicapped, and reviews
programs now in effect.
It costs $40,000 a year to
keep someone in a chronic
patieQt hospital, about $12,-
000 to keep him in his own
home, where he may con-
tribute
to the society in
which we live.
People in wheelchairs find
architectural barriers to
libraries, stores, banks,
barbershops and churches.
Other problems they en-
counter are with hotels ,
motels, employment and
transportation.
The sale of Rehandart is
one way the handicapped
can be self-supporting. Mr.
Angus attracted a large
crowd at intermission with
his demonstration of mouth -
painting:
Larry Parker of Kichener,
also a quadraplegic, was the
second speaker. He is the
community development of-
ficer for the Kitchener dis-
trict March of Dimes, and
has a university degree in
literature and art. Prior to
1978 he was,chief dispatcher
for the Ontario Automobile
Association, and lived in
Windsor.
Mr. Parker said that many
disabled persons would have
preferred to have this year
named the International
Year of Persons with
Disabilities, as one person in
ten has some disability.
He says that unemploy-
ment among the employable
disabled is over 50%. The
film "A Different Ap-
proach" was shown. It
pointed to the different at-
titudes shown by people with
respect to employing
physically disabled people,
and some of the recreational
activities enjoyed by 'them,
especially at their summer
and winter camps. This ex-
cellent film is available
from some libraries:
The wheelchair Mr.
Parker was using costs $659.
A powered chair costs 32700,
and an artificial leg with a
knee joint costs from $2500
to 93000. Many people have
only a government pension
to liveon, so assistance from
March of Dimes is vital for
these things.
The women of St. John's
Church in Stratford led the
worship service, using the
drama "What Does the
Cross •Mean to You?" The
offering was divided equally
between the March of Dimes
and Rehandart.
