The Buckeyes will now meet the Hensall Sherwoods in a best -of -seven series to decide the trophy winner. The Buckeyes are defending champions. The first game of the final will be played in Hensall Thursday night with the se- cond contest slated for the Zurich arena at 2 p.m. Sun- day afternoon. Three straight goals in the third period allowed the Buckeyes to pull out Mon- day's win by a 5-4 score and advance to the finals. The Saints took an early 1.3,,ad with the only two goals of the first period. Wayne Kibler converted a pass from Randy Johnston to put the Saints on the scoreboard 'at 17.10 of the first period. Bantams tie Howick Zurich and Howick ban- tams are tied at one game apiece in the Western On- tario Athletic Association championship finals. Zurich wor, the first of the 3 of 5 series games by defeating Howick 6-3 on their home ice, Friday. Howick led off the scoring in the first period. Goals by Bob Snell, assisted by Derek McKinnon and Bryan Kading, and McKinnon, assisted by Dennis Schroeder. built Zurich's lead. McKinnon, singlehanded, and Kading, assisted by Snell and McKinnon, stretched the Zurich lead to 4-1 during the second period. Howick narrowed the lead with two goals near the end of the period. McKinnon fired in his third, and second single- handed goal in the third period. Kevin Lavery, assisted by Mark Boogemans and D'Arcy Martin, made the final score 6-3 for Zurich. An almost single-handed effort by Bryan Kading couldn't save Zurich in the second game, Sunday. Howick returned the favor, defeating Zurick on its own ice 6-4. Kading scored once in the first and three times in the second period. Kading's goals put Zurich ahead 4-3. Two assists each went to McKinnon, Snell and Schroeder. One assist was by Rick Kuepfer. Howick was not to be put out this easily though. They tied the score in the third when Zurich's McKinnon was in the penalty box for roughing. Howick scored again for the win and added insult to injury, scoring yet again, with only five seconds left to play. Howick won it, 6-4. In the second frame, Gerald Weido notched the first Zurich goal on passes from Kerry Bedard and Kim McKinnon at 7.02.. It took the Saints only two minutes to get that goal back as EdMichniewicz registered on a three-way effort with Ken Vanos and Joe Boyle. Near the midway mark of the period, Kris Bedard cut the Zurich deficit to a single goal as he scored on a pass from Gerald Weido. • The Buckeyes tied the score at 4.14 of the final period on a successful shot by captain John Graham. Steve Bedour assisted. Kerry Bedard scored on an unassisted effort at 14.45 to put the Zurich club ahead for the first time and with less than four minutes left, Ran- dy McKinnon fired what proved to be the winning goal on a pass from Rick Schilbe. The Saints put on the pressure in the last couple of minutes, but, could only come up with one goal. It came from the stick of cap- tain Ken Vanos on passes from Ed Michniewicz and Wayne Kibler with only 26 seconds left. The Buckeyes took a two games to one lead in the series with a 5-3 victory at the Stephen township arena, Thursday night. Most of the scoring came in the third period after the LISTEN UP — Coach Al Scott explains the strategy to Zurich novice players, as they prepared for a tie breaking shoot-out. With five players, each, shooting, Zurich managed to fire in two winning goals to beat Strathroy 5-3. Zurich won the B (consolation) championship, at the tournament in Zurich, Saturday. Saints scored in the first period and the Buckeyes tied the count in the middle frame. The only goal of the first 20 minutes of play came from the stick of Ed Michniewicz of the College on a pass from Ken Vanos at 7:49. The Buckeyes got back on even terms at the midway point of the second period on a successful shot by Randy McKinnon on a pass from Steve Bedour. The score remained tied until 8:12 of the final session when Kim McKinnon fired a shot into the Centralia net on a power play attempt with assists going to John Graham and Rick Schilbe. Captain John Graham upped the Buckeyes lead to two goals as tallied on an unassisted effort at the halfway point of the period. Another Zurich power play was successful at 14:43 with Pat Bedard being the marksman on a play started by Jeff O'Brien and Gerald Weido. The fifth Zurich goal of the game came one minute later as Graham converted a pass from Schilbe. Down by four goals, the Saints tried a last minute rally, but, fell two goals short. Ken Vanos scored on a solo dash for CCAT with 58 seconds left and Joe Boyle was successful only 12 seconds later on a play set up by Ken Vanos and Ed Michniewicz. Sherwoods advance The Hensall Sherwoods scored two victories this week to advance to the championship round - The Sherwoods eliminated the Forest Boyds three games to one.
