This may have brought the team bad luck, as they lost both their tournament games. Later a Strathroy team borrowed the shirts, and lost to Zurich. Shown here are: (back), coach Les Gardner (left) and manager Harry Moir; (back row, from Left) Brad Dewys, Scott Banks, Paul Hill, Jason Clarke, Rob Ducharme, Mike Hoffman, Ben Rathwell, David Hayter, David Hoogeness, and Steve Campbell; (front row, from left) Brad Mount, Derick McGee, John Rooseboom, Devon Moir, Rob Hoffman, and Chris Gardner. Varna vacationers meet Jimmy Bill and Joyce Dowson and Allan and Marjorie Hayter had a unique experience when they stopped at Plains, Georgia on their way home from Florida. They shook hands with former president Carter and his wife Rosalyn Varna by Mary Chapin who arrived there in their helicopter. They also saw a woman they believe was President Anwar Sadat's wife, who was visiting the Carters... They were in Winter Haven for .four days and visited with Bob and Willa Taylor, and also visited Rev. Alex and Margaret Taylor when they were in the Tampa area. Church guest speaker Miss Deborah Hart, from near Dunnsville, a student at Emmanuel College, was the guest speaker in Varna and Goshen churches on Sunday. She spoke on behalf of the appeal for two million dollars for the college in the next three years, for badly needed additional staff and increased overhead costs because of inflation. Thete are 200 students, ages 22 to 70, enrolled in basic and advanced courses, up 100 percent since 1969. If each envelope contributor in the four central conferences were to contribute $3.50 per year for the three years, the one and a half million they hope to get from this source would be realized. There will be a campaign here in the near future. Miss Hart, who has a degree in physical educa- tion, had being prayerfully considering the ministry for some time, and told how a visit to Israel so impressed her that her desire to minister was confirmed. Young people of the charge were invited to talk with her during lunch after the ser- vice at Goshen. The Women's Group is meeting again on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 for study sessions. A quilt is being done this week, and hopeful- ly, banners for the front of the sanctuary. Please remember the Easter meeting of U.C.W. tonight. Varna Novice players The Clinton Novice team, coached by Ron Jewitt and Doug McAsh, won a beautiful trophy in the Zurich weekend tournament. They defeated Hensall 3-0 on Friday, Huron Park 3-2 Saturday morning, and lima -Logan (Monkton area) 1-0 Saturday afternoon. These kids play surprisingly good hockey for their age. I might add a correction - Paul Caldwell, son of Ken and Marg, lives in Clinton, not Brucefield, as most peo- ple around here would know. The Hensall Atoms, the team Jim Hill and Scott Kir- ton play for, had 'a 4-4 tie game against their dads on Wednesday night. Varna 4-H club The seventh and final meeting was held at the home of Kate Keys. We open- ed the meeting by saying the 4-H motto, "Learn to do by doing". We answered the roll call with "What will co- ordinate with your vest?" We finished our cost re- port of garment sheet and garment evaluation sheet, and our own evaluation of our garment, then did the record of achievement in Ready -- Get Set -- Sew ! We played the "=Clothhesline Game". When it was done correctly, you had a skirt and vest on paper. Lori Hayter will be the commentator for the fashion review on achievement night. Peggy Van Wonderen and Jacqui Taylor will ex- plain the exhibit. We designed our book covers and talked about our trip to the Ice Capades on April 7. by Julie Webster.
