Friends gather for
40th anniversary
A happy occasion took
place in Varna last Friday
night when 85 friends and
relatives joined with Elmer
and Norene Hayter at the
township hall to celebrate
their 40th wedding anniver-
sary. Following a delicious
dinner catered by. Valma
Varna
by Mary CSE!
Miller of Seaforth, an even-
ing of fun` and reminiscing
took place, with a hilarious
"skit presented by family
members, and another by
their neighbours. (Picture a
couple of their sons back in
diapers and buggies).
Margaret (Gerald's wife)
was the narrator, and music
by the children was in-
terspersed throughout the
program. Addresses were
read by Carol Simons on
behalf of the neighbours, and
their son Allan for the fami-
ly.
An open house was held at
their home on Sunday when
well over a hundred friends
called on them to extend
congratulations.
Varna 4-H Club
Our fourth meeting was
held at Sandra Turner's
home. We' took attendance
and talked about achieve-
ment night, which will be
held on Tuesday, May 12 at
Huron Centennial School for
all 4-H clubs `in the
Brucefield area: -
Sandra showed us how to
do interfacing like the exam-
ple in the book. The seniors
learned how to put in a
zipper, and were to do it for
homework. After the
meeting we had a snack.

Jack Hunt, who was ad-
mitted to Clinton Hospital on
Monday, returned home on
Saturday afternoon.
Charles and Bernice Reid
arrived home Friday from a
very enjoyable_ vacation in
Hawaii, well -bronzed from
all that lovely, warm
sunshine. They were lucky
enough to land back in
Toronto when the city was
bathed in bright sunshine,
too.
' March is Red Cross
month, and a canvass is.
beginning shortly in Varna
and surrounding area under
the leadership of Mildred
McAsh. The Red Cross is
still very active in World
Relief, and in our own coun-
try has many first-aid
stations in isolated areas,
trains swimmers in life-
saving techniques, and of
course provides free blood
transfusions with blood they
collect at their donor clinics.
A very beautiful prayer
service on the theme "The
Earth is the Lord's" was
prepared by American In-
dian women for the World
Day of Prayer. A joint
Varna -Goshen service was
held in Varna on Thursday
evening, led by Doris.Wilson
and Bonnie Roy. Margaret
McClymont offered prayer,
and Margaret Hunt read the
scripture selections. Evelyn
McKinley read a translation
of Chief Seattle's impressive
speech, given in response to
the American government's
offer to buy their land. Carol
Simons gave a talk based on
James Johnston's poem
"Creation". Joan McAsh
also took part. A duet was
sung by Joyce Dowson and
Marjorie Hayter.
An adaptation of this ser-
vice will be given n Sunday,
as Rev. Brown is taking a
course at Princeton Univer-
sity, and the U.C.W, is con-
ducting the church service.
The two U.C.W. groups
separated_ for their
business meetings. Presi-
dent Doris Wilson, anounced
that the open house for those
who took the crewel em-
broidery course will be held
in Ontario Street church in
Clinton on April 1 from 7-10
p.m. There will be a meeting
of the Varna group to set up
a display for it.
Enough stainless-steel
knives and water glasses
will be purchased to bring
the supply up to 100. A large
package of used stamps was
sent to the Leprosy Mission.
Members were reminded to
continue collecting them and
Marg Hayter will send them
in. Discarded pantyhose
should be saved for use In
the craft room at the Blue
Water Rest Home.
Treasurer Marg Hayter
reported that $374 was realiz-
ed from the pancake supper,
up considerably from last
year. The group has been
asked to cater for Wat and
Ruby Webster's 50th wed-
ding anniversary on Sept. 5.
The annual dessert euchre
will be on April 15 this year,
and the fall turkey
smorgasbord on Sept. 23.
Golden Glimpses
One of the sure signs of
spring must be the tulips
which are poking their heads
above ground in the
flowerbeds here.
Films were shown on Mon-
day evening followed by
refreshments.
The Ladies Auxiliary held
their regular monthly -
meeting for the Residents in
the dining room. A
shamrock was pinned on
each Resident present. Miss
Dorcas Gingerich enter-
tained with organ music.
Mr. and Mrs. Roes Love
played several seTectlons on
the piano and violin and Mrs.
Carmel Sweeney favoured
with a reading. The Girl
Guides sang a few numbers
and recited their pledge.
Refreshments followed.
Residents who were out
during the week .were Mrs.
Nancy Koehler, Mrs.
Beatrice Overholt, Mrs. Inez
McEwen, Mrs. Mabel Ja-
ques and Mrs. Margaret
Pfaff.
Bingo was played on Fri-
day evening followed by
refreshments.
The members of the
Bayfield United Church
choir presented a musical
programme on Sunday after-
noon which was very much
appreciated.

Miner of Exeter.
