Group attends Toc Alpha
Rodger McKinley, Liz
McNutt, Brian Cheesell and
George Wilson, the four
members of the Varna -
Goshen Youth. Group who
attended the Toc Alpha
Christmas conference in
Varna
by Mary Cimessen
Hamilton, led in worship and
told of their experiences
there at the Varna church
service on Sunday.
They told of seminars they
attended on music and the
meaning of the songs they
sing and listen to; cults and
how they operate; drugs;
how to choose the field they
are most suited for in their
life's work, etc. Lit was
interviewed on Hamilton
radio and Brian on
television. Each of them
highly recommended
the experience to all
teenagers, and said they
would like to go again.
They led in singing the
song "Cat's in the Cradle", a
statement on the father who
has little time for his son,
then finds in his old age that
his son is too busy for time
with him.
The Goshen service was
cancelled because of bad
weather, so the youth panel
is scheduled to make their
presentation there a week
from Sunday.
John Woodhouse has
resigned his job at Bev Hill's
to take a position with the
Oxford Swine Artificial
Insemination Association at
Woodstock. He will be
missed, as he was active in
sports and 4-H work while he
was here. Bob and Michelle
Rourke and their 10 -month-
old son have moved into the
house vacated by John. We'd
like to welcome them to the
Varna community.
The Vanderwal's new barn
has gone up rapidly in spite
of the wintry weather, and
was almost enclosed except
for the roof when we went
past on Saturday. Murvin
and Ruth Johnston's home
has a lovely new look with
the addition of new siding.
The Hayters have been
tearing down the house on
the former Johnston place.
They found the walls lined
with issues of The Farmer's
Advocate, dated as far back
as 1913. They were ad-
dressed to Frank R. Weeks.
The ads were especially
interesting, some from
companies still in existence.
An ad for a folding bath tub
interested me In particular,
as we had one when I was a
child. One men's suit
company advertised suits for
$12.50 to $16.50. There were
many ads for stoves, most of
them quite ornate, and alot
of pictures of draft horses.
Butter on the Montreal
market was 22 to 24 cents a
pound, cheese 13 cents,
"strictly fresh" eggs 29 cents
per dozen.
The skating carnival for
Stanley Township residents,
being held this Saturday
from 7 to 9 will have a
slightly different emphasis
from the past couple of
years. There wili_be family
skating, and children are to
come in costume, as there
will be .prizes awarded for
best costhmes. Races will
also be held (no broomball
this year) . As usual, there
will be a refreshment booth
in the hall.
Congratulations to Don
and Debra Rathwell on the
birth of their son Darcy
Donald last Tuesday mor- -
fling.
Brian Chessell has
received a first prize award
in the Legion Remembrance
Day essay in both the
Clinton local and zone
competitions.
Hiep Nguyen has resigned
her temporary teaching job
in Kinkora to take a position
with the Huron County Board
of Education. She will be
teaching the Indo-Chinese
students in the "English as a
Second Language" program
at Clinton high school for
four days a week, then will
spend one day travelling to
elementary schools to plan
programs for refugee
children.
