the Hay Township Farmers'
Mutual Fire Insurance
Comapny it was reported
that the company experienc-
ed a steady rate of growth
along with higher than nor-
mal losses. Ian McAllister
was elected president.
The Tenderspot food store
of Grand Bend announced it
would be opening a store in
Zurich sometime in April.
Firemen responded to a
false alarm at the Blue
Water Reif. Home.
The Zurich library, ex-
perienced a marked in-
crease in its book circula-
tion.

Hay townshiprch received a
request for increased finan-
cial support from the Hen-
sall and district community
centre and were scheduled
to meet with officials from
the Zurich arena concerning
the township's financial con-
tribution towards the opera-
tion of that facility.
A study on the possibility
of water from the Lake
Huron pipeline for residents
two and a half miles north
along the lake was com-
pleted.
According to the Huron -
Perth regional assessment
office the populations of
Zurich and Hay township
decreased slightly while
Stanley township saw its
population grow by 22 per-
sons.

Zurich escaped serious in-
jury when the truck which
she was driving overturned.

Jane Ann Poswalk of Var-
na died in a fire which
destroyed her residence.
At the annual meeting of
the Hay telephone system,
the company admitted it had
no idea the number of
telephone subscribers or
what constituted a sub-
scriber. At the same
meeting, secretary -
treasurer Bill Wagner said
the company need the $815,-
000 debenture issue and a
rate increase.
A meeting between of-
ficials of Hay, Stanley and
Stephen townships and
Zurich learned that the
Zurich arena could use $10,-
000 in repairs and
renovations if the funds
were available.
As a result of continued
acts of vandalism, access to
the Zurich Post Office lobby
was restricted.
The Zurich Buckeyes
reached the semi-finals in
the South Huron Hockey
League.

Zurich was faced with the
possibility of the loss of the
Westlake Ambulance Ser-
vice due to holdups in its sale
^aused by the Ambulance
Services Branch of the
Ministry of health.
The village of Zurich saw
its levy to the Ausable
Bayfield Conservation
Authority lowered by 156
while Stanley township saw
their levy increase by over
$600.
• Stanley announced they
would be employing a
student in the clerk's office
during the summer.
The Zurich Buckeyes were
up one game in their South
Huron Hockey League semi
final against the Centralia
Marauders.
MPP Jack Riddell told the
annual dinner and dance of
the Hay and Stanley federa-
tion of agriculture that
although there would be
some rough times the future
of farming in Canada looked
good.
The Compassion faith and
life . crusade was getting
ready for its 12th year of
operation.
Gordon Erb said his
daughter Carol who has been
in Soviet invaded
Afghanistan would be retur-
ning in July "if not sooner."
The hockey team from St.
Boniface defeated M't.
Carmel in the Knights of
Columbus hockey tourna-
ment in Seaforth to take the
senior B championship.
Thieves caused about $2,-
000 damage to the Drydock
Restaurant in Bayfield.

A committee headed by
Philip Durand of Zurich won
its first battle against the
construction of thermal
generating stations on the
shores of Lake Huron.
Clerk -treasurer Mel
Graham announced the hir-
ing of Steven Elliott of Var-
na as a summer assistant.
The month of April was
termed as an important
month in terms of indicating
the employment situation
for the remainder of the
year, by the Canada employ-
ment centre.
Huron county council ap-
proved a budget totalling $9
million, up seven percent
from last year.
Napoleon Corriveau
retired from the staff of the
Blue Water Rest Home
after 13 years of service.
The formation of a
Bayfield recreation com-
mittee was given tentative
approval by the village coun-
cil.
In the second annual
novice hockey tournament
Blyth took the A division
while Elma-Logan took the
B crown.

Former president of the
Ontario Federation of
Agriculture Peter Hannam
told the Zurich Lions Cub
that the 1980's will be a
period of uncertainty for
members of the farming
community. •
Sandie Arlein of the
Listowel Chamber of
Commerce told the Zurich
and district Chamber of
Commerce that it was im-
portant for the small
Chambers such as Zurich to
make their views know.
Former Huron-bruce MP
Bob McKinley had his car
stolen. It was found near
Huron Park.
Rock collectors Ken and
Dorothy Breakey were
featured on CFPL
Television's "Morning
Break" program.

For the second con-
secutive year, the Zurich
Buckeyes emerged as cham-
pions of the South Huron
Hockey League.
A strike by the Bayfield
fire department was averted
when the Ontario fire
marshall's officer agreed to
mediate a pay dispute with
the local fire area board.
MPP Jack Riddell was
asked to set up a meeting
between representatives of
four area municipalities and
the ministry of health in
order to determine the
ministry's plans for am-
bulance service in the area.
The Zurich recreation,
parks and community centre
board discussed the idea of
increasing the size of the
board to' include represen-
tatives fo the various user
groups.
Several Zurich and area
residents were scheduled to
appear on the television
porgram "Bowling for
Dollars."

taxes by 14.65 percent.
Hydro was knocked out for
five hours south of Hensall
when high winds caused a
tree to fall across hydro
lines.

Only two crashes
despite poor roads
Despite less than ideal
driving conditions due to
snow and icy roads, area
drivers came through the
past week with a com-
paratively good recordd.
The Exeter OPP in-
vestigated six accidents,
four of which were listed as
non -reportable with damage
being minimal.
On Tuesday, vehicles
driven by Alida Gamble and
Raymond Lang, both of RR 1
Granton, collided at the
intersection of County Roads
11 and 6 in Winchelsea.
Damage was listed at $800
by Constable Bob Whiteford.
The other accident oc-
curred on Wednesday on
Highway 21 near Drysdale
and involved vehicles driven
by Adrian Brand, RR 2
Bayfield, and Richard
Ingram, RR 2 Hensall.
Constable Wally Tomasik
listed total damage at $1,400.
