Zurich Citizens News, 1980-12-24, Page 6• Page 6 Citizens News December 24, 1980 Present special programs at churches On Wednesday evening the pupils and staff of Hensall Public School entertained a large number of parents and friends with a play entitled "A Christmas Carol" Though the chief character, Scrooge was still important to the play, many of the scenes were written and developed by the pupils and staff members. The role of Scrooge was shared by various pupils so Hensall Bertha McGregor 1 as to minimize the number of lines to be memorized. Todd Goudie, Rod Parker, and Pam Cottrell shared the part of Scrooge. In the play the kingergarten class sang these songs: Snow, Snow; Merry Christmas; I know; Peppermint Stick; Jingle Bells and Away In A Manger. Following this chorus the Junior Choir sang these numbers : Do You Hear What I Hear; Little Dove, Little Darling; arid Drum- mer Boy. These scenes were part of the play: Skaters' Waltz by grades two and three, The Leftovers Christmas by grade one: Holiday Dance grades two and three; A Vision of the Future by grade seven; A Change of Heart by grades five and six; A Medley of Songs in french by the same grades and grades three and four did two scenes The Orphanage and The Cratchet Home. Following the play the senior choir sang these numbers Low How a Rose`Ere Blooming; God Rest You Merry Gentlemen; Good King Wenceslas; Deck The Hall and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The junior choir was led by Ms. Mary Ellen Walsh while Mrs. Donna St. John con- ducted the senior choir. A service of joy held in Carmel Church The service at Carmel Presbyterian Church on Sunday was a service of joy. The kindergarten and grade one gave "The Christmas Worship; grades two, three and four "The Three Emblems and grades five, six and seven sang "The Gifts of Christmas". The Youth Group with the help of the Senior Choir put on a presentation during the hour of worship. Special numbers by these two groups were Angels We Have Heard on High, While By Me Sheep, Bright and Glorious Is the Sky, ,Good Christian Men Rejoice. Mrs. Dorothy Taylor presided at the organ. Taking part were: Elaine Love, Valerie Baker, Lori Mousseau, Cathy Love, Jane Pollock, Rev. Knight, Becke Baker, Bruce Thomson, Anne Mousseau, Mary Thomson, Darlene Faber, Barbara Stretton, Lisa Stretton, Margaret Hoggarth, Darlene Varley. The Young People involved in the Nativity scene were Cathy Troyer, David Skea, Donna Taylor, Janet Hoggarth, Murray Taylor, Greg and Paul Hoggarth, Jerry Faber. Miss Sandra Wadell played two accordion solos "0 Holy Night" add "0 Come All Ye Faithful". The members of the three congregations participated in the carol service, after which the Arnold Circle evening Auxiliary served refreshments and a social hour enjoyed. Former Hensall man passes away Edgar Lloyd Ortwein passed away suddenly in Redwood City, California in his 63rd year, son of Bertha Blackwell and the late Milton Ortwein. Survived by his wife Margaret (Billings) daughter Mary Lynn Loud, Redwood and son David of North Bend, Oregon and one grandchild. Minor hockey squads win Two teams in Hensall's minor hockey system picked up victories on the weekend with the Novice squad edging Zurich 5-4 and the Bantams blanking Huron Park 4-0. For the Novices Mike Hoffman had the hat -trick while Chris Gardner and John Rooseboom added one goal each. Darren Moir led the Bantams with two goals while Philip Lovell and David Skea had the singles. I.O.O. F. Lodge members entertain The Hensall I.O.O. F. lodge members entertained their wives and members of Amber Rebekah Lodge on Thursday evening when thirteen tables were in play. Ladies high prize was won by Mrs. Percy Noels, Exeter; Ladies consolation by Mrs. Earl McNab; gent's high Earl McNab; con- solation Bob Parsons. Lone hand Clarence Volland. A delicious turkey dinner was served following the euchre. Tickets were drawn on a ham which was won by Charlie Hay. Tickets were also sold on a -quarter of beef which was won by John London man wins doll The Ladies' Legion Auxiliary money doll was won by a London, Ron Timmer of Wonderland Road. The second prize of $10.00 was won by Jim Chalmers, Exeter and the third prize $.5.00 was won by Mrs. Jean Snell Exeter Chandler, Kintore; a side of pork was won by Roy Pepper. Sing favorite carols The singing of the favourite Christmas carols opened the Christmas Service at the United Church on Sunday morning. led by Dr. Topp at the organ. Rev. McDonald spoke on the ,subject of "The Joy of Thristmas" Everyone was reminded of the Christmas Eve Service • on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. Everyone in the community is invited to attend. The United Church choir along with their husbands and wives were entertained on Thursday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Mock for their annual Christmas Party. Ushers at skating championships Mr. and Mrs. Howard Datars, Elizabeth .and Sandra attended the 1981 international junior world figure skating cham- pionships at Thompson arena, London, last weekend. Sandra was an usher throughout the week which gaveher a chance to meet people from all over. Seniors Christmas Dashwood Seniors enjoyed a Christmas dinner prepared by the catering group Monday, December 15, with 58 in attendance and 7 din- ners sent out. Following dinner group five with Mrs. Ken McCrae, chairlady in charge, held a sing song of Christmas carols. Mrs. Pearl Miller, president, conducted a business portion. An in- vitation to play at Hensall's February meeting was turned down due to the prospect of bad weather. Mrs. Ross Love reported on the plans for a medical clinic. An in- ternational Convention is to be held in Don Mills May 19- 21. January 19 will be a quilting and fun day with a pot luck supper. A Seniors representative speaker is being sought to find out the possibilities of a Seniors' apartment building in Dash- wood. Dashwood Mrs. Irvin Rader Men's Club Dashwood Men's Club held their Christmas at the Community Centre with their wives dinner guests. The meeting opened with 0 Canada with president, Anthony Martene presiding. Plans were made for the Christmas party for Dash- wood and area children. The muppets and a magician are to be in attendance and films. A fifty-fifty draw will be held. Ron Merner, en- tertainment chairman gave a report of plans for the coming year. Harold Fink- beiner \introduced the guest speakers, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Miller who spoke and showed films of their trip to Australia. Santa paid a visit to Dash- wood Children's Christmas party Saturday December 20th. A large attendance at the community centre was provided with en- tertainement and treats. Films were shown and a magician held the rapt audience in his hand with his particular brand of magic. The fifty-fifty draw winners were Chris Leibold, Calgary, Alberta, N. Corrigan, Komoka, and Joe Miller, Dashwood. A lot for the medical centre has been purchased from Milt Keller on the corner of County Road 12 and Roland Street. Man dies after fall A 45 -year-old Dashwood man died in Univetsity Hospital, Saturday, as a result of injuries sustained when he fell down the cellar steps at his home about a week earlier. Howard Karl Fischer fell down the steps on December 13 and was taken to hospital the following day for treat- ment 01 head injuries. Exeter OPP Constable Jack Straughan investigated the death. It was indicated by witnesses that Fischer had been in the cellar changing his clothes and when he started up the steps, fell backwards and struck his head.
