Huron County has i . a
sheriff. But he doesn't wear

speed chases. And although
he is permitted to carry a
,gun, he seldom does.
While speaking at a
meeting of the Wingl#am

recently, Huron County's
sheriff, Fred Jewell,
dispelled all television and

He explained that his of-

Actually, this might be a good crop to investigate
as the peanut crop south df the border has been reduc-
ed almost by half, thanks to the drought in the summer
and toomuch rain in the fall.
Kraft Canada Limited, the nation's largest peanut
butter manufacturer has already raised its price 30
percent on its 375 gram size of peanut butter.
Othercompaniesare expected to raise their prices,
including the makers of Skippy peanut butter. -
A spol1esman for Kraft said his company would be
lucky if they receive half their normal supply of
peanuts.

According to the metric . commission of Canada
switching to metric won't change the nature of Cana-
dian football' as long as it stays with three downs, ac-
cording to indications from a study conducted during
the 1979 season.
The study did determine that a switch to four
downs would result in less passing, fewer punts and
fewer last -down gambles.
The metric field 100 x 60 metres fits into all ex-
isting conventional fields of 110 x 65 yards. The conver-
sion results in a field that pis shorter by the length of a
football at either end, with the centre strip becoming
the 50 metre line.
When you think of it, on a given series of downs a
team would have to advance less than a yard more.
English Common Law. Once
upon a time, the sheriff was
the chief officer of a town
and his position was one of
great authority. However,
the sheriff's powers were
somewhat reduced when the
Normans introduced jury'
trials.
In Ontario, the sheriff's
office is the oldest office in
the province except for the
justice of the peace, Mr.
Jewell pointed out.
In Huron County, the
sheriff is a court official who
enforces the orders of the
court, primarily. in civil
actions. He is a peace officer
under the Criminal Code but
in practice, he is seldom
called upon to make arrests.
One of the sheriff's main
duties is looking after court
security, said Mr. Jewell
who is also theregistrar and
county court clerk. Other
duties involve collecting
debts under a writ of
execution, which alrows the
seizure of property or en-
forcing evictions through
writs of possession issued by
the court. A sheriff is the
only official with the
authority to carry out an

eviction, pointed out Mr.
Jewell.
The sheriff also has
responsibility for the
selection of jurors to hear
.civil and criminal cases and
frequently is employed in the
service of legal documents
when an affadivit is required
to prove that the document
has been served personally.
Unlike earlier times, a
sheriff no longer has
authority over jails, though
he may still be called upon
from time to time to tran-
sport prisoners, particularly
from one jurisdiction to
another.
A sheriff is required to use
tact and diplomacy and
relies heavily on the
goodwill of his staff, Mr.
Jewell explained.
