HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1980-10-16, Page 12Page 12 Citizens News October 14, 1980 Buckeyes take first win The Zurich Buckeyes began defence of their South Huron Hockey League title Sunday with a 6-4 victory over the North Middlesex Merchants in Parkhill. The victory was the SPORTS • SPOT Buckeyes' second of the week as they defeated the Centralia College of Agricultural Technology Saints 11-7 in an exhibition contest Thursday. The Buck's next game is tonight in Exeter when they take on fellow SHHL finalists the Exeter Mohawks. Zurich is idle until next Thursday when they play the Centralia Marauders. Leading the way for the visiters was Kerry Bedard as he picked up a pair of goals and an assist. Zuirch jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first period on goals by Mike Clarke and Bedard. Kim McKinnon, Steve Bedour and Pat Bedard added the assists. In the second frame North Middlesex scored two goals to tie'the game but Bedard's second goal of the game allowed the Bucks to regain their lead. Clarke and Bedour added the assists. Zurich took a two goal lead with 9:47 remaining in the period when Clarke with help from Randy McKinnon put one past Murray Jameson, in net for the Merchants. North Middlesex edged closer to the Buckeyes last in the period when a Merchant fired a shot past Jurgen Hellman who was playing his first game as a Buckeye. Gerald Weido scored the game winning goal unassisted with four minutes gone in the third period. McKinnon added the in- surance marker for Zurich with less than five minutes remaining in the game with help from Bedard and Bedour. Parkhill scored their final goal with 1:13 left to play. The game was on the rough side with game of- ficials calling 37 penalities. In their exhibition contest against the Saints the Buckeyes came back from a 7-2 deficit to secure the win. Scoring two goals each for Zurich were John Graham, Pat Bedard and Glen Nicholson. Picking up the other goals were Dave Cyr, - Jeff O'Brien, Rader, Marvin Merner and McKinnon. Ken Vanos had the hat - trick for the Saints while John Jonker had a pair of goals. Joe Boyle and Mike Sadler had the other CCAT goals. J.'s lead series While snowy weather may not be a.that far away four teams are still playing in the Zurich men's rec fastball league playoffs. In the A series the D.J.'s after being down one game have come back to take a 2-1 lead in the . best of seven final. On Wednesday the team in blue easily handled the Dominion Tavern team as they scored a 17-4 victory. On Friday the D.J.'s took the game by default as the Taverners failed to field a team. In the B final the Pontiacs took a 1-0 lead in their best of seven series as they edged the Patz Boys 5-4. The Pontiacs scored three runs in the second inning on singles by Don O'Brien, Bob Merneri, Percy Bedard and a double by Bob Brown. One inning later a walk to Mike Overholt and by Barry Overholt produced another run while the Pontiac's fifth and final run came in the sixth inning on doubles by Merner and Percy Bedard. Zurich Buckettes The Zurich senior ringette team made up of a group of very enthusiastic young ladies, have chosen the name "Zurich Buckettes" for themselves. The team includes: Patty Debour(chosen team cap- tain), Debbie Smith, Shannon Smale, Joanne McKinley, Debbie Overholt, Nancy Overholt, Lori Turkheim, Janice Campbell, Beth Gelinas, Vicki Bedard, heresa Dietrich, Nancy hornton, and Jackie Bedard and Lori Meidinger (team Manager). The Buckettes will form one of this areas first ringette teams, and will be playing competitively with other area teams hosting home games, as well as travelling. The cost of equipment operating expenses for a team just starting out is great.
