A Hensall youth who hit a
tree and sign when he was
distracted by a bee, escaped
a "sting" in Exeter court,
Tuesday.
Sam. M. Toornstra, 17, had
been charged with careless
driving as a result of the
accident at the corner of
Andrew and Hill Street in
Exeter on September 16, but
the charge was dismissed.
In his defence, the accused
said he had just come from
Zurich

and when he looked over a
second time to see the insect,
he hit a sign and then
rammed into a tree a short
distance away
Damage to his vehicle was
$1,200 and Toornstra
sustained a cut lip.

when he arrived to in-
vestigate
Zurich WI meets
The Zurich Women's
Institute held their regular
meeting in the Hay Township
Hall on Monday.
Mrs. M. McKinnon, Mrs.
F. Kane and Mrs. L. Regier
were members of the
committee in charge. Mrs.
M. McKinnon acted as
chairlady.
The program opened with
"0 Canada," followed by
singing the Institute Ode,
then repeating the Mary
Stewart Collect. Mrs. Grace
Martin was pianist.
In keeping with the
thanksgiving season the
group sang "Now thank we
all our God."
The groups enjoyed Mrs.
Grace Martin at the piano
accompaning her son Derek
on the Kazoo.
The theme for October was
"Citizenship and World
Affairs," for which Mrs.
McKinnon prepared and
presented a very interesting
paper, in which she stated a
good example in The home
has the greatest possibility
of producing a better citizen,
and in turn good citizenship
is essential to shape the
future of World Affairs.
If consideration of others
was more prevailent it would
help to establish a better
unified Canada and World.
She also mentioned our
Canadian freedom should be
better appreciated.
Mrs. H. Hohner will be a
delegate to the Area Con-
vention to be held in St.
Marys October 27-28. Mrs.
W. Neeb to be alternate.
The November regular
meeting will be held Wed-
nesday, November 5 at 7:30
p.m. at which time
a demonstration and display
of Christmas articles will be
presented by the manager of
"Christmas Place" in Grand
Bend. '
An invitation from
Seaforth to attend their
October meeting was ac-
cepted.
Mrs. W. Neeb and Mrs. V.
Fisher reported on the
County Rally held in Gorrie
October 6.

In dismissing the charge,
Justice of the Peace Douglas
Wedlake said there ap-
parently was . a distraction
and added that the driver did
not appear to bedrivingat a
high rate of speed.
However, he cautioned
Toornstra to stop his car
next time he attempts to get
rid of a bee.
In the only other case,
Martin D. Traquair, RR 3
Exeter, was found guilty of a
charge of careless driving on
September 3 and was fined
$128.
On the date, he struck a
school bus full of youngsters
from Huron Park. There
were no injuries and the
driver of the bus had pulled
onto the shoulder of the road
when she realized that the
vehicle driven by Traquair
was about to collide.
The accused had been
following a pickup truck, and
when the latter started to
turn left, Traquair pulled to
the right and lost control of

mischief charges. They had
been charged with
destroying three town traffic
signs in Exeter on Sep-
tember 21.
Charged were Joseph
Grenier, Seaforth; Richard
Marvin Kehn, Brucefield;
and Sheldon Leonard,
Simcoe.
They were ordered to
make restitution of $30 each
for the $90 worth of damage
caused.

$2,800 in the accident.
Traquair said he did not
see any signal lights on the
pickup truck which was
turning ahead of him.
In December of last year
and in January of this year,
he received gas or cash in
the amount of $59.91 from a
local service station by false
pretences.
The court learned
restitution had been made
and Barrett was given six
months in which- to pay the
fines. He was fined $125 or 12
days on each of the four
counts.
