assistance in having them

you had sticking in your back indicated you did not re-
quire an iron supplement or the lawyer who told you
that the hanging judge was in a good mood today.
These gentlemen could be victims of. . what's
becoming known as professional burnout.
According to Professor Eli Glogow of the Universi-
ty of Southern • California's School 'of Public Ad-
ministration burnout symbtons ' range from heavy
drinking to argumentiveness to zombie -like behavior.
"People who work with someone who has burned
out know it intuitively. It's a kind of physical as well as
emotional fatigue caused by excess stress and strain
on the individual in which the individual really begins
to wear out. .
"Sometimes- the individual is conscious of it and
sometimes not. Drinking, tranquillizers and drugs are
ways they cope with it. Very few organizations are do-
ing anything to help them. But that will increase.
There will be more programs to help them."
There's no simple way to prevent burnout, he said,
because what drives oneperson over the edge doesn't
always bother the next guy.
If you feel you're beginning to sizzle, Prof. Glogow
recommends a little decompression.
"Employees should try to develop what we call
`detached concern'. You should be vitally interested in
your job but also have some distance. Your job is im-
. portant but It's not your whole existence.
