HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1980-10-09, Page 3Councillor Harry Klungel to seek
election as reeve of Hensall
For the first time in
several years, Hensall
voters may have to go to the
polls to choose their reeve.
Councillor Harry Klungel
announced this week that he
would seek election to the
post to be vacated by Harold
Knight. Previously, Coun-
cillor Paul Neilands had
stated that he would run for
Hensall
Bertha BI.Grcgor
the reeve's post upon
Knight's retirement. •
Knight held the position for
some time and was never
challenged.
Reports indicate that a
former reeve, Minnie
Noakes, may attempt a
comeback and would run for
a council post.
In his announcement this
week, Klungel 'said
would like to see Hensall
embark on a project to bead
housing facilities for senior
citizens, similar to the
geared -to -income units in
Zurich and Exeter. He
suggested that people who
have lived in Hensall for
most of their lives should be
able to stay in the com-
munity in their senior years
and not have to move
elsewhere.
Klungel, who has served
four years on council, also
indicated he would like to see
Hensall undertake a com-
munity betterment program
of some type. "It (the
village) just doesn't look as
pretty as it did 15 years
ago," he commented.
While agreeing that
private landowners had to
accept the major challenge
in that regard, he said that if
the council gives them some
incentive it would pay
dividends.
The former owner of the
Queensway Nursing Home
suggested he would also like
to see the businessmen
organize a chamber of
commerce or some similar
organization to improve
their . individual status,
noting that it is becoming
rough for small businessmen
to maintain their position in
view of the increased
competition from major
shopping facilities in the
area.

while the children's safety is
the main concern, an
agreement to bus the
