Zurich Citizens News, 1980-08-21, Page 15Area seniors converge upon Kingston for convention By OWEN PEMBERTON Bayfield Ever Young club was represented at the• 22nd annual convention of the United Senior Citizens of Ontario by two delegates, Esther Wright and Gwen Pemberton. Many others from Huron County were observed among the 700 delegates and visitors in attendance on the campus at Queen's University where the annual event takes place. USCO was incorporated in 1961 with 100 clubs. It now has more than one thousand across the province with 250,000 members. It is , a powerful and growing force and the president J.B. Van Waggoner of Toronto re- elected for a third term stressed the responsibility of the incoming Executive to carry out the directives of the delegates in convention. "At the present time, all indications point to a serious economic recession in this country. Inflations is still a main threat with the price of all commodities, especially energy,risingat a ratebeyond comprehension. Your in- coming executive will need the support and especially the unity of our oganization to combat the existing conditions of the economy." The speeches delivered and the many resolutions submitted by the member clubs - ninety six were dealt with, gave evidence of serious concern for the welfare of the many senior citizens who are living on incomes recognized as below the .poverty level. The resolutions dealt with four main subjects, health, housing, pensions and education tax. Fifteen dealt with health matters and Medicare in Crisis was presented with the con- currence of the Resolutions Committee and unanimously adopted. Speakers at the Con- ference were Mr. Jim Dahl - direcctor, Ontario New Horizons, the Hon. Keith Norton - Ministry of Com- munity and Social Services, and Mr. Charles McDonald - president Natigpal Pen- sioners and senior citizens federation. Mrs. J.L. Lerette, past president, U.S.C.O. represented the organization • .---F..):0;101;*!Nd 344r0 at the last five International Senior Citizens' Conferences in Strasbourg, France, Los Angeles, California, Belgrade , Yugoslavia Christchurch, New Zealand and Agra India. He announced that the 1981 International Conference will be hosted by the U.S.C.O. on May 19th, 20th and 21st in Toronto. "This may be a once in a lifetime opportunity to attend a world congress. We urge all groups which can afford it to send representatives. We look for assistance and a large participation from our members, not only in Ontario, but also across Canada. Mr. Lerette said. I asked Mrs. Wright what impressed her particularly about the conference; her replyit was so well planned and executed through the voluntary effort of many dedicated senior citizens.
