Kingston for convention
By OWEN PEMBERTON
Bayfield Ever Young club
was represented at the• 22nd
annual convention of the
United Senior Citizens of
Ontario by two delegates,
Esther Wright and Gwen
Pemberton.
Many others from Huron
County were observed
among the 700 delegates and
visitors in attendance on the
campus at Queen's
University where the annual
event takes place.
USCO was incorporated in
1961 with 100 clubs. It now
has more than one thousand
across the province with
250,000 members. It is , a
powerful and growing force
and the president J.B. Van
Waggoner of Toronto re-
elected for a third term
stressed the responsibility of
the incoming Executive to
carry out the directives of
the delegates in convention.
"At the present time, all
indications point to a serious
economic recession in this
country. Inflations is still a
main threat with the price of
all commodities, especially
energy,risingat a ratebeyond
comprehension. Your in-
coming executive will need
the support and especially
the unity of our oganization
to combat the existing
conditions of the economy."
The speeches delivered
and the many resolutions
submitted by the member
clubs - ninety six were dealt
with, gave evidence of
serious concern for the
welfare of the many senior
citizens who are living on
incomes recognized as below
the .poverty level. The
resolutions dealt with four
main subjects, health,
housing, pensions and
education tax. Fifteen dealt
with health matters and
Medicare in Crisis was
presented with the con-
currence of the
Resolutions Committee
and unanimously adopted.
Speakers at the Con-
ference were Mr. Jim Dahl -
direcctor, Ontario New
Horizons, the Hon. Keith
Norton - Ministry of Com-
munity and Social Services,
and Mr. Charles McDonald -
president Natigpal Pen-

He announced that the 1981
International Conference
will be hosted by the
U.S.C.O. on May 19th, 20th
and 21st in Toronto. "This
may be a once in a lifetime
opportunity to attend a world
congress. We urge all groups
which can afford it to send
representatives. We look for
assistance and a large
participation from our
members, not only in
Ontario, but also across
Canada. Mr. Lerette said.
I asked Mrs. Wright what
impressed her particularly
about the conference; her
replyit was so well planned
and executed through the
voluntary effort of many
dedicated senior citizens. To
look after 700 people is not
easy." She referredalsotahe
the untiring effort which
obviously goes into the in-
between activities of the
executive and the com-
mittees.

express their appreciation to
