I , know I sometimes express a word of complaint when fac- ed with it. but maybe We look at these things from the wrong point` of view. Over the past few months I 1 have had the opportunity to work with farmers par- ticipating in the Ontario Tor- nado Disaster Aid Program. It has helped to give me a better idea of how bankers and 'ome government peo- ple feel about application forms. The farmers I dealt with were mainly concerned with getting their farms and lives back on keel after the destruction. and sometimes overlooked the importance of filling out those four pages of financial loss and equity information. It just takes too much time to dig it Ontario cucumbers are available now Whether you plan to enjoy them fresh in salads or sandwiches or make them into pickles, Ontario -grown field cucumbers are available now, say the marketing specialists at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The major growing areas for field cucumbers for the fresh market include Essex, Halton, Peel, Norfolk and York Counties, and Mill Grove and Ottawa areas. Cucumbers grown for processing come mainly from the Essex, Kent, Oxford -Middlesex and Norfolk -Elgin Counties. The majority of field cucumbers grown in Ontario are grown for the processing industry. Itis interesting to note that cucumbers for pickling and eating come from the same cucumber plant. The dif- ferent stages of maturity determine if the cucumbers will be used for pickling as gherkins (most tender), baby dills, dills, or cucumbers for eating (fully mature cucumbers.) If you plan to pickle cucumbers this year; the peak of the season is now until about the end of August, although field cucumbers will be available until frost% When selecting fresh field cucumbers for . eating or pickling, choose reasonably straight, -firm ones with a fairly uniform green color. To store cucumbers for fresh eating, wrap them in plastic and refrigerate. Pickle cucumbers as soon as passible after picking or purchasing, preferably within 24 hours. Use only the freshest product for pickling to help ensure a fine quality pickle. Continued from page 4 Miscellaneous Rumbllig of the bean festival conteai. Looking after the event this year is Mrs. Al Scott. Two changes should make a considerable impact on the festival. Thanks to the committee and Dick Rau two new store fronts are in place. At the rear of the festival kitchen a new cooler will be employed to lower the temperature of the beans. For those who enjoy coffee the following from the Canadian Standards Association should be of interest. "The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the Canadian General Electric Company Ltd. (CGE) advise owners of certain CGE drip coffeemakers of a potential fire hazard which may be present in some un- its manufactured between October 1976 and April 1978. CGE has instituted a national program to modify the coffeemakers in question. Only the models which bear the following code dates are affected. Model DC200A - 6710 through 6712; 7701 through 7712; 7801 through 7804; model DC400A - 6709 through 6712; 7701 through and 7712; 7801 through 7804; model DC500A - 7706 through 7712 and 7801 through 7804. The model number with the code date can be found on the underside of the drip coffeemaker. No other un- its are affected. Owners of these CGE drip coffeemakers should stop using them and return them, less the carafe, to the nearest CGE aughorized service depot for modification without charge. These service depots are listed in the Yellow Pages under Electric Appliances - small sales & service or as shown on the list of ser- vice depots packed with the product." Banks require very detail- ed information on your operation before they can authorize ea loan. They need to know what you have, how you use it. and how you plan to use it in the future. When lending thousands of dollars a mistake can be disastrous to them as well as to you, the farmer . The government, also, requires detailed informa- tion and is probably the worst offender in the employment of tedious application forms. "Why is this so?" It,might not be re- . quired if the government was one person. but it's not. It is made up of thousands of people. It might not be re- quired if the government knew you likea neighbour down the road: or would take the time to always deal with you personally; or could make policies that cover Province -wide and still suit every operation perfectly ... but it doesn't, and it won't. and it can't. In several instances I received incomplete OTDAP forms. I had to repeatedly go back to get that information from the farmer when it could have been compiled the first time. That costs all of us money via my salary. But what is more important and quite crucial is the time lost in getting that final authorization. With the high cost of money these days, time is money. When you deal with a banker it is good business to be organized and efficient at filling out any form you are confronted with. The banker sees this as a reflection of how you do business with every one and on your farm. The banker knows that a farmer who can clearly show on paper what his operation has and is doing, is also the farmer who clearly knows its potential and how to work to achieve it. He is simple a safer client to deal with, and will get a better deal. Let me ask you this - "Is several thousand dollars worth of financial assistance PROTECT YOUR PETS Pet owners can ensure a safe summer for their families and their pets by taking a few simple precautions, says Dr. Howard Neely, of the Veterinary Services Branch, Ontario . Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Although wildlife often takes the blame, rabies are usually spread to people by domestic animals. First, make sure all cats and dogs are. inoculated for rabies on a regular basis. Talk to your veterinarian about the frequency of rabies inoculation. And, avoid all Contact with wild animals; children should be taught to treat all strange animals, with extreme caution. "One of the symptoms of rabies is abnormal behavior," says Dr. Neely. "Wild animals may become overly friendly and move into populated areas. Pets may show sudden mad, aggressive behavior or become overly friendly, as well." In the wildlife population, the most common carriers are the fox, skunk and racoon. Rabies are found occasionally in squirrels and more recently in some species of bats. Rabies can affect Most warm-blooded animals. This virus disease is usually transmitted through the saliva of an animal, usually by bite. The disease attacks the nervous system and causes death if left untreated. "Farmers can be infected by rabies through contact Please turn to page 12 worth an evening's paper work?
