Ontario Minister of Agriculture and Food Lorne Henderson said at the opening of the new Huron Hall residence at the Cen- tralia College of Agricultural Technology, Saturday, that the occasion marked an important milestone in the history Of the College. He told an audience of over 200 people of the memories he was reminded of that day. "When .Centralia College opened, back in 1967, we took on several buildings . which had. been built for other purposes. Gradually we have brought some of'those buildings up to our own standards. In other cases, we have replaced those original buildings altogether t" he said. Henderson said that the new facilities, with a capacity for 200 students, represent a wise investment in the future since careers in. the - agriculture and food industries are becoming increasingly popular. In 1969, he said there were only 49 - Centralia College graduates compared to over 100 each year since 1972. He also said that the new residence symbolizes his ministry's commitment to the future of agriculture and the government's- concern with • energy conservation. Guenther tossed the last - four frames and was touched for four runs and seven hits. The Tigers scored single runs in the second and third innings on a two -bagger by Glen Thurman and singles by Dan Heywood and Doug Fairbairn. In the Tiger fifth,• Kevin Bestard's home run sent Fred " Robinson and Barry Baynham home ahead of and held Owen Sound to four well scattered hits and pick- ed up six strikeouts. Doubles by Kevin Bestard and Glen Thurman and a single from the bat of Jim `Dietrich sent two Tiger - runners home in the fourth inning. In the Dashwood fifth, Bob Hoffman walked and was able to score without the help of a hit. The final four runs came in the sixth and were powered by singles by Fred Robinson, Dan Heywood and Bob Hoffman and a home run delivered by Jim Guenther. Minister of Government Services Douglas Wiseynan gave a rundown of the various energy-saving devices built into the new residence. These include a solar panel which draws energy tb sheat the water used in the building, earth which has been built u{ around the north walls to prevent heat loss, and a mechanical : ventilation system which reclaims, the' heat contained in the exhausted air to be reused to heat incoming air. Wiseman'also commented on the co-ed nature of the residence, saying that things had changed since his days., But he said he was glad to hear, -that there would be separate pods for boys and. girls. At the conclusion of his , speech, `Wiseman presented a : ceremonial key to Hen- derson to officially open the residence. . When it came tithe to cut the ribbon, Henderson in- sisted upon forfeitirtg his job to former MPP and cabinet minister_ Charlie Mac - Naughton; Exeter, who had negotiated on behalf of the government of Ontario in 1967 to lease the buildings currently ysed by the College from the Ontario Develop- ment Corporation. Greetings were also given by the Township of Stephen reeve Ken Campbell, Huron County warden William Morley, and Centralia college principal Doug Jamieson. The dedication of the building was done by Rev. James Forsythe from the Exeter United Church. Deputy Minister of Agriculture an& Food Kenneth Lantz was the chairman . of the opening ceremony. - A tour of the new facility and refreshments followed the official ceremony. People are also invited to - tour the recently completed Agricultural Mechanical Building.
