Pork producers awarded
Ten Ontario porkproducers
received cash prizes for their
ingenuity at the- first Pork
Congress Innovators
Competition, at the 7th
annual Ontario Pork
Congress.
The first -place winner,
Lyle Vanclief of
Ameliasburg, received $300
for the heat exchanger he
developed to save heating
costs in his weaner and
farrowing rooms.
"For many years we were
concerned because we were
blowing warm air out of the
feeder barn during the cool
months of the year while
spending money to heat the
weaner and farrowing
rooms," says William
Elsasser, herdsman. "The
heat exchanger allows us to;
use the warm air from the
feeder pig room to heat the
other rooms."
The inventors say the heat
exchanger has several ad-
vantages over conventional
electrical heating systems.,
The heat pump is more
sensitive to temperature
changes in the barn, and the
system can be switched over
to work as an air conditioner
in the summer.
The main advantage,
however, is the cost. Mr.
Elsasser says meters

recorded electrical cost
savings of $850 to $900 per
year. And the system is
inexpensive to operate. They
estimate they can heat five
rooms for 60 percent of the
cost of heating one room with
electric heaters. The only
disadvantage is the high
initial cost of about $7000.
Second -place winner Tony
Van Rooi jen of RR 2
Springfield _ developed a
fence line feeder for high -
moisture corn to win the $200
prize. Frustrated with
cumbersome rotary feeders,
he designed a feeder
featuring a full -swinging
front that acts as an agitator
to loosen the feed and allow it
to drop to the hopper bottom.
The hopper is designed wider
at the bottom than the top,
and allows more space for
the corn and prevents it from
bridging.
"I've designed these in
various sizes and widths, for
different sizes of pigs and
we've had the best results
with weaner pigs," says Mr.
Van Rooijen. "We've
shortened days to market by
two to three weeks, im-
proved our grade and
reduced feed costs by
reducing waste."And air -

blown feed delivery system,
designed by Robert Huber of
RR 2 Kenilworth, was
awarded the third prize of
$150. The system uses air to
suck grain into a metermill
for processing, and then
blows it directly into pig
feeders or storage bins.
"This system is ideal for
diffic-ult handling
situations,” says Mr. Huber.
"We can bend it to go
anywhere, overhead, or
underground. It can be
hooked up to any type of
metermill and it has no
moving parts, so it is
relatively maintenance-'
free."
Each of the entries was
judged on its innovation or
adaption, its practicality and
its benefit to the pork in-
dustry. A panel of five
judges, including a ministry
swine specialist, an
associate agricultural
representative, two pork
producers and an allied
industry representative,
rated the 10 entries.
"We believe that a number
of pork producers have good
ideas, and we want to spread
these ideas to the rest of the
industry to help other
producers," says Andy
Bunn, Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food swine
specialist and chairman of
the innovators competition.
"Many producers will read
about these innovations and
perhaps incorporate them
Into their operations. It's a
kind of self-help program."
The congress plans to
continue the innovators
awards competition again
next year, and hopes that it
will be continuing attraction
at the annual Ontario Pork
Congress.
