cold water, they were unable
to right the boat, and the
canvas deck sticking out of
the water was acting like a
sail, carrying them farther
out into the lake.
FortunatelyIan Schofield,
had his sailboat, the
Suyaema, out for an evening
Hayfield
by Bud Sturgeon
Gwen Pssssbortoss '
cruise, and son Douglas at
the wheel noticed the small
craft in trouble.
The Suyaema circled the
`Hobie Cat' warily looking
for obstructions, then moved
in close enough, having to
take down the main sail for
greater control. A tow line
was attached and the four
persons were hauled to
safety aboard the Schofield
craft.
They then began to tow the
boat slowly toward the
harbour at approx 1 knot,
but the tow -line broke.
A powerlaunch which was
rescuing another `motor
boat' which had run out of
gas came over and being
more maneuvrable in close
quarters, reconnected the
line.
Eventually the `Hobie Cat'
was towed into harbor (with
everyone singing 'When the
Saints...') and righted,
leaving four people pretty
wet and shaky, but happy to
be on dry land after a
valuable lesson in sailing
which could well have been a
tragedy.
It is nice to see that we
have alert sailors, as was the
crew aboard the Suyaema,
operating out of the Bayfield
Harbour.
Pretzel led sign
A vehicle, which has been
described as a station
wagon, came reeling around
the infamous Highway 21
curve in Bayfield late
Saturday night, instantly
transforming the stopsign
theron into a 'pretzel -like
object and eclipsing one of
the posts in Clan Gregor
Square. Unable to find
another exit from the park,
the car (after a complete
circle therin) left the same
way it had entered.
Technicians from the
M.T.C., and aided by the
OPP, quickly erected a new
STOP sign in the morning.
And while signs are in the
news we must say that those
M.T.C. people are so sneaky.
First they get everybody
laughing by putting up one
with the wrong name, then it
disappears. Late last week
they were all back in place
bearing the 'Main Street'
name.
Question to the M.T.C.
"Are you sure that it is
correct now?
Let's give credit where
credit is due though. Even
though we `lampooned' them
a bit, in all seriousness, one
right out of two attempts
isn't a bad percentage for a
government organization.
Firemen attend party
Lorraine Hulley and
friends had a party at the
Ken Hulley residence on
Lakeshore Road Saturday
night, which was attended by
the Bayfield Fire Depart-
ment who showed up around
10:00 p.m. to extinguish a
chimney fire on the
premises. The partr _doers
looked slightly embarrassed
as a crowd of 50 persons
gathered to watch. Little
damage was done to the
house thanks to prompt
action.
Rummage sale
This year Pioneer Park
Association rummage sale,
has been deemed to best
ever. Association members
were worried after at-
tendance had slipped in 1979,
that the 40 year old annual
event might be losing its
appeal to the public.
Their fears were dispelled
on Friday night, as over 2000
bargain hunters jammed
into the arena helping them
to gross about $3800.
This years expanded sale
featured three new booths
(along with all the regulars)
a silent auction, a baking and
preserves table and a hot dog
stand.
The winning bid for the
airplane ride over Bayfield
was submitted by Paula
Lane, while other prizes
were captured by Jim
Wallace, Goderich, and Elva
Metcalfe, Bayfield, each
receiving brunches at the
"Little Inn."
The money raised will go
towards the installatin of
more gabion baskets below
Pioneer Park as well as
other projects.
Chairman RoseCroswaite
would like to thank all those
that contributed in any way
to the event, for making it
such a tremendous success
thanks also goes to the table
lifters' and the `cleaner -
uppers' and especially to
Maggie McLean dand
Audrey Marriot, and the
local contributing stores.

The Bayfield Flyers who
got off to a poor start this
season, have pulled up their
socks and currently ride a
three game unbeaten streak.
Wednesday night in
Bayfield the Flyers hung
tough and took the
Bluewater Lakers all the
way to a 19-19 tie.
Sunday evening theFlyers
were jubilant bunch of
ballplayers as they handed
the third place Zurich Eagles
an 11-5 trounding at the
Bayfield diamond.
The Knighthawks had no
regular season games
scheduled last week.
In tournament play, both
Bayfield Men's Teams
competed n the Varna Slo-
pitch tournament over the
weekend the Knighthawks
lot their first game but went
on to win the 'B' cham-
pionship while the Flyers,
who won their first game,
lost out in the second round
of 'A' division play. Full
tournament scores and
winners appear elsewhere in
this weeks paper.
In Bluewater Ladies Slo-
Pitch the Babes were idle
this week and the Stanley
Stars closed in on first place
at the expense of the Blue
Shadows and the Goodtlmes.
Last Tuesday evening the
Stars defeated the Blue
Shadows in Bayfield, as they
turned on the offence and
came away 20-7 winners.
Wednesday evening in
Zurich, the stars notched
another two points as they
hammered the Goodtimes by
a 14-1 score.
As a result of an un-
fortunate fall in the Blues -
Stars game, Bayfielder
Eleanor Ritchie will be
sitting out the remainder of
the season with stretched
ligaments and torn knee
cartilage. Her spirits were
not dampened as she was
later heard to say, "My leg
had better be alright for
skiing and broomball this
winter."
