were in Goderich for the
opening of the new
headquarters of the Huron
County Libaary and archives
last Thursday afternoon
when the Lieutenant
Governor of Ontario Pauline

main entrance, to make the
official opening. Those ob-
served in the audience from
Bayfield were Mr. Frank
Mac Fadden, Reeve of
Bayfield, Mrs. Leroy Poth,
archivist for the Huron
County Archives of the
Huron County Historical
Society which are now
housed in fireproofed
quarters in the library,
Mrs. Maud Weston and Mrs.
Marcia Triebner from the
Bayfield libaray, Miss

the Bayfield archives, Miss

Bayfield Historical Society,

Garden club news
No Garden Club meeting
will be held in July due to the
number of public events at
this time. However Garden
Club members wishing to
take advantage of
Cruickshank's special price
of Iris, etc. should place their
orders this week with Doris
Hunter for August delivery.
Mr. and Mrs. James Quick
will represent the Garden
Club at the Pioneer Park
Rummage Sale Garden
Centre and Mrs. Fraser
Fellows with Mrs. Paul
Pendleton will create a float
for the Garden Club to enter
in the Lions' Club Carnival
parade.
Divide iris now, they like
bone meal mixed under their
planting soil and remember
don't plant them too deeply.
Give your extra roots of any
Serennials to the rummage
sale.
Hydro out
The hydro was out for an
hour on Saturday evening
with cause unknown. The
good side says that's one less
hour we'll have to pay for but
on the other hand no doubt
the rates will soon go up to
cover `rising' repair rates at
double time and a half on
holidays.
Bud Griffin of Detroit was
a recent vicitor with Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Sturgeon in
Bayfield. Once regular
summer visitors to the
village, this was the first trip
back in some 35 years, but
plans now include spending
next summer here.
Gary and Rhea Potter, Gil
and Helen Latimer and
Binnie and Elaine Sturgeon
and family visited with
Thelma Gemeinhardt,
Harold and June Brown, Bob
and Helen Woolever and Carl
and Jeneane Gemeinhardt
and families in Saginaw,
Michigan for several days
last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard
Scotchmer, Rob, Lori and
Carolyn of Chatham, are
spending a bit of summer
vacation at their residence
on Keith Crescent.
Visitors at the Hollow on
Sunday included Nancy and
Arne !Gelber and family,
Winnie Davidson, Janlie
Davisorf, Kathryn and Carey
Bowan and Janice Moody,
all of London, Ron and
Colleen Davis from New
Providence, New Jersey and
Dave andSandra Green,
owners of that great bakery,
"Flears", in Grand Bend.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Pounder, and Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Davison of Bayfield
and Windsor, respectively,
motored to Mnaitoulin Island
for a three day holiday late
last week.
The bass fishing is not yet
up to par, but Saturday
morning Blaine Stephenson
and Jim Thompson and some
of his McKillop Slo1Pitch
baseball team took a few
hours leave from their
tourney at Kinburn to test
their luck at the bridge in
Bayfield. But alas, only 4
were caught, none by them,
this time around. Could have
been the fact that they stored
the bait in a `gasoline', pail.
As far as the perch fishing
went a few stringer fulls
were sighted, indicating an
upswing in the pier fisher-
men's luck this past
weekend.
,This week in sports
Upsets story of
the week
On the season they were
previously winless, but
Wednesday night the
Bayfield Flyers took off
under new coach Steve
Shanahan, as Gary Potter
singled in two runs in the
ninth downing the Zurich
Cobras by a 11-10 score at the
Bayfield diamond.
The league leading
Bayfield Knighthawks tried
desperately in the bottom of
the ninth inning to overcome
a half dozen run deficit, but
fell one shy al the second
place Stanley Steamers from
Varna topped them 13-12 in
Men's Slo-Pitch action
Thursday night.
At the Clan Gregor Square
diamond on Thursday night
the junior boys fastball
squad, the Bobcats trailed by
one run after a couple in-
nings, but then the Varna
Juniors turned it on and
came away with a 33-9
victory. The Bobcats are
now 0-2 in regular season
play.
In Bluewater ladies slo-
pitch, the top ranked Babes
were unable to mount any
kind of offence as they met
the Stanley Stars in Bayfield
on Tuesday evening, losing
by a close 6-4 margin'. The
loss left the hometown Babes
with a 4 point lead over
Varna and the Stars in the
regular season standings.
A note of thanks goes out to
Dave Johnston of the
Bayfield Building Centre,
who has built and donated a
new spectators bench for the
diamond in the Agricultural
Park. Players and fans alike
are most appreciative.
In the final game of the
week, the Bayfield
Knighthawks dropped the
Zurich Eagles by a 4-2 score
at the Zurich diamond on
Sunday.
Bayfield yacht club
regatta held over
holiday weekend
The sailaboaters made the
most of the holiday weekend
running numerous races out
of the Bayfield Harbour.
Sunday, the coastguard
cutter "Rapid" from
Goderich was on hand as the
radar warned of an ap-
proaching storm front. At
times high winds and heavy
rain kept the competitors off
the lake and sent many other
sailboats and pleasure craft
seeking refuge in the har-
bour.
By Monday afternoon the
racing schedule was com=
pleted and the trophies and
awards were handed out to
the winners.

Yachting Association Award

follows: midget ocean racing

ternational offshore rule -

being divided into an "A"

trophy was presented to
winner Bud Jones of London,
Skipper of the Sandpiper.
So ended a weekend of
excitement, competition and
sportsmanship as the crews
did battle with the lake.
Thanks goes out to all who
participated ' or helped in
making it a highly successful
event for the Bayfield Club.
In other sailboat news we
note that Bayfield boats,
Scarlet Fever (George
Cantrick) and Feather (Reg
Ort) placed first in the IOR
and MORC classes
(respectively) in the Lake
Huron Yachting Association
Series no. 1, the Fran Merritt
Race sponsored by the
Sarnia and Port Huron
Yacht Clubs on June 20.
Final standings in the BYC
Spring Series PRF Class
were as follows: first -
Whisper II (Stu Smith)
second - Felicity (Tony
Webster), third - Zephrys
(Larry Parsons), fourth -
ApresSki (Irish
Ferguson) and fifth -
Mega (Jim Parker)
The Spring series which is
normally calculated on the
best four out of five races
was reduced to a best three
out of four resulting from the
cancellation of the SS no. 5
race on June 8 due to high
winds. No results were
posted for the IOR and
MORC classes.
This week the skippers and
crews will be preparing for
one of the biggest races of
the season, the Lake Huron
Yachting Association no. 3,
the Grand Bend 100, spon-
sored by the Grand Bend
Yacht Club. The racing gets
underway Saturday and they
will race through the night
with winners being deter-
mined on Sunday. Good luck
to our local sailors who will
be competing against• a
strong field of up to 60 other
boats.
