Fires destroy area school
A former Tuckersmith
school house was destroyed
by fire Sunday afternoon.
A spokesman for the
Hensall fire department said
his men answered the call to
the former SS Number 10
three miles north-east of
Hensall around 4:30.
When they arrived the
school house which had been
time the visitors viewed the
work of the school and heard
•their songs and program
relating to their theme.
Much appreciation goes to
those who organized and
assisted with leadership for
this school and also to those
who sent cookies for the last
day as well as for the
younger children's break
period.
The regular United Church
service was held on Sunday
with Rev. Stan McDonald in
charge. He took for his
message. "When the wind
goes out of your sails."_
Family picnic
On Sunday, July 6 their
family' and several friends
enjoyed a picnic at the home
of Mr, and Mrs. Leonard
Hensa11
Bertha McGregor
converted into a residence
by Mrs. Janice Smale of
Toronto was out of control.
Firemen experienced a
water shortage for a short
period of time with pumper
units from Brucefield and
Clinton called to the scene.
Mrs. Smale managed to
save a few items from the
house which contained
several antiques.
The building was insured
Mrs. Smale told firemen.
Cause of the fire has not
been determined with no
estimate of the loss being
made.
A barn north of Kippen
was destroyed by fire early
Tuesday morning.
The structure which was
owned by Ross Faber of
Tuckersmith township, was
believed to have been struck
by lightening.
According to Brucefield
fire chief Stu Broadfoot by
the time his men arrived on
the scene at 2:15 a.m. the
barn was burning quite
extensively.
Also answering the call
were the Hensall fire
department who supplied a
water tanker.
Lost in the fire were an
undetermined number of
sheep with Mrs. Faber
saying a number of sheep
were saved.
No loss had been placed on
the barn which was insured.
There was an ex-
ceptionally good atttendance
at the annual vacation Bible
school held in the United
Church this past week for the
Hensall district.
Approximately 118 students
and staff attended the school
which had as its theme
"Jesus Our Lord".
The vacation school
opened on Monday morning
and continued throughout
the week with sessions held
each morning from 9:00 a.m.
to 11:30 a.m. Scott Jesney
was in charge of property
set-up assisted by Darron
Moir.
Florence and Glenn Slade
conducted the registration.
Janise Moir and Cathy
Geiger were superintendents
for the Nursery department;
Joan Alexander for the pre-
primary department,
Barbara Gackstetter for
the primary department,
Shirley Luther for the
middlers and Rev.
McDonald the junior
department.
The teachers assisting
with the school were: Wendy
Banks, Dianne Rock, Donna
Hamather, Kay Gardner,
Randy Parker, Vicki Mann,
Joan Corbett, Audrey
Christie, Bev Moir, Cathy
Mann, Janet Moir, Trudy
Ferguson, Dorothy Brint-
nell, Peggy Volland, Peggy
Campbell, Sharon Travis,
Sherry Travis, Barbara
Stretten, Nancy McCullough,
Joyce Pepper and Shirley
McAllister. Laurie, Joanne
and Marilyn Peppgr were in
charge of Baby and toddler
care.
On Friday noon and
assembly was held at which
Noakes. Guests in at-
tendance were from Guelph,
Ingersoll, London, St.
Columban, and Crediton.
Persona is
Mr. William Horton of
Detroit returned home after
visiting with his brother Mr.
and Mrs. Bert Horton and his
sister Mrs. Mae Rowcliffe.
Mrs. Annie Noakes
returned home after visiting
for a week with her son and
daughter-in-law Mr. and
Mrs. Lloyd Noakes and
family in Mt. Brydges.
Mr. and Mrs. Don
Mousseau celebrated their
twenty-fifth wedding an-
niversary at the Pine Ridge
chalet on Saturday evening
which was largely attended
by many neighbours and
freinds. A dinner for family
and friends was served to
some one hundred and
thirty guests. Guests were
greeted by the host and
hostess who received many
congratulations and best
wishes. Dancing was en-
joyed to music by Joe
Overholt's orchestra.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack
McLaughlin and sons
Raymond and Stuart of
Glasgow, Scotland were
recent visitors with Mr. and
Mrs. Arthur Slade and Glenn
whom they have not seen in
twenty-one years. Mr.
McLaughlin and Mr. Slade
were employed by the same
firm in Toronto.
Rev. Stan McDonald
house, barn
visited on Sunday in Atwood
with his sister Mrs. Chester
Earl when a family fathering
was held honouring their
mother Mrs. Carl McDonald
who celebrated her eightieth
birthday. Present were Rev.
McDonald, two sisters
Grace, Mrs. Norman
Coughlin and Ruth, Mrs.
Chester Earl along with their
families as well as Mrs.
McDonald's sisters and their
husbands.
Mr. and Mrs. Garnet
Mousseau of Ridgetown
visited last week with
relatives and friends here
and attended the former's
brother and sister-in-law's
25th wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Bertha MacGregor
returned home after visiting
with her son and daughter-
in-law Mr. and Mrs. Don
MacLaren, Jodi and Brooke
in Oakville.
Rev. Kenneth Knight
conducted service in Carmel
Presbyterian Church on
Sunday. The church service
will be discontinued until
August 10th while Rev.
Knight is on vacation.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Corbett
were hostesses at their home
on Sunday when they en-
tertained their families to
dinner, attending were Mr.
and Mrs. Ross Corbett and
Jeff, Mr. and Mrs. Steve
Corbett, Mr. and Mrs. Al
Corbett and family, Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Chaffe and
family Joey Chaffe and
friend Mitchell.
