Several Exeter and area firms have received solicitations for services from a Toronto based firm known as Intra Canada Telecommunication asking if they wished an ad to be placed in the "Ontario Classified Telephone Direc- tory". The solicitations which could be mistaken as bill for ads which appear. in Bell Canada's "Yellow Pages" have the following state- ment underneath the name and address of the local firm; Ceci est une sollicta- tion pour services et non une facture ... this is a solicita- tion for services and not a bill, invoice or statement of account due. You are under no obligation to make payments on account of this offer unless you accept this offer". Citizens News, July 3, 1980 Pogo 11 e 'bil1ings' bare A small survey of area busnesses shows that several firms have received the apparent billings .but in all cases, have not made any payments. Jim Jarrett of Exeter Collision thought the billing was Bell's Yellow Pages whose billing is handled by a firm known as Teledirect. He said he would contact his bookkeeper to make sure no funds were forwarded to the company. Hensall Motors .had received the solicitation but had disregarded it, Eric Campbell said. The "bill" prompted Frank McNall of Huron Collision to call the business office of Bell Canada who told him the item was not a bill from their firm or associated companies. Jim Barnetson of Whitings' Warehouse said he "filed the letter under G" after he had read it. Area manager for Bell Canada Peter Croome said the best advice that he could give to local merchants was to take a close look at all ap- parent billings. "Its just good business sense," he said. Croome said he had per- sonally seen two of the notices but that there was little that Bell could do, aside from keeping their customers informed. He said the yellow pages were copyright and there was no course of action which could be taken unless the example of the ad which is attached to the solicitation is exactly the same which appears in the Yellow Pages. Intra Canada, meantime, has been investigated by police forces at Kitchener and Guelph and the French - English "disclaimer clause" is the "legal loophole" through which the company stays within the lay while forwarding documents to which an actual Bell Canada yellow page display ad is at- tached, a constable has been quoted as saying. Merchants who have phon- ed the telephone number, 363-3677, imprinted on the "invoices" have reached a recording which says "all the operators are busy and will call you back." According tq the Bell Canada accounting depart- ment, the telephone number is actually a "disconnect" which is being used as "an odd number" by the sub- scriber. The subscriber, according to accounting, is a company called Cam -Help In- sulation Products of 299 Queen St. W. Toronto, aTthouggh__iIntra Canada is at 111 Rithmond St. W. accor- ding to the "invoices."
