President Tom Oegema told the -222 family farmers present that "Those initial steps in organizing Christian farmers thirty years ago were steps of faith+. Im- migrants from the Netherlands brought with them a strong Christian faith and a commitment "to love, compassion, morality and justice that needs a public and concrete expression." He noted that the Dutch im- migrants of thirty years ago have now become "Canadian citizens - and proud of it!" The Federation began at a meeting in Strathroy, where delegates from four local associations met. A year later 11 associations joined the federation and a membership fee of 25 cents per farm fami- ly per year had been established. The Federation now has 600 members and has 21 Associa- tions scattered from the Niagara Peninsula to the Rainy River District, and from Dundas to Kent County. For 1985 the Federation adopted a budget of $165,000 and the membership cost is expected to be about $280.0o. Tom Oegema was re- elected President. Bill Jongejan, a 36 year-old hog farmer from the Goderich area in Huron Coun- ty, was re-elected Vice - President. It will also be Jongejan's third year. Farmers are no better off; in fact, most of therm are worse off. The so-called economic recovery has not hit the farm gate. "Drop the last year into the silent limbo of the past. Let it go, for it was imperfect, and thank God it can go," said Brooks Atkinson. Do we expect too much in this country? If the year was imperfect, can we get closer to perfection this year? We are certainty far, far better off than those thousands, perhaps millions, of starving people in Africa, especially in Ethiopia. We are, in fact, far better off than most other na- tions of the world. But with the natural resources and the sparse population of Canada, should we expect more than we are getting? "Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a go- ing on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us," said Hal Borland. If only we could apply the wisdom we have gained in years past. So many of us live lives of quiet • desperation making the same mistakes, covering the same ground in the same way, paying no at- tention to what little wisdom we may have gained. Thomas Mann said: "t'ime has no divisions to mark its passage. There is never a thunderstorm or blare of trumpets to announce the beginning of a new year. Even when a new century begins, it is only we mortals who ring bells and fire off pistols" and get drunk, I might add. In my younger years, a New Year's Eve party was a highlight of the month. Older and wiser in some ways, I en- joy an evening with a few friends, usually some of our family. The years slip by and melt into a monotony of figures with only a handful remembered vividly. "Now the New Year reviv- ing old desires, the thoughtful soul to solitude retires," said Omar Khayyam in the beautiful words of the Rubaiyat. A few moments alone to reminisce, a few moments for a lingering kiss, is about all the excitement most of us need. The ravages of time are catching up to this old crock of a body and theslomacn rebels after a few'convivial , drinks. Our physical bodies keep telling us, as we grow older, that we are not immortal. "Looking forward into an empty year strikes one with a certain awe, because one finds no recognition. The years behind have a friendly aspect, and they are warmed by the fires we have kindled. and all their echoes are the echoes of our own voices." said Alexander Smith 1 don't know about you but I am approaching the new• year with a great deal 01 trepidation. I'm a little fear- ful of what may be around the corner although 1 am hoping it will not be a repeat of 1984. Perhaps, the worm will turn and I might even win a lot- tery Hope springs eternal in the human breast. "(Jpon the chaste scroll of the New Year, I would in scribe for you with wohold and flowing strokes. the Good Luck symbol, and with full brush delineate the ideaograph of laughter," said Canadian poet Carol (bates ('assidy. Ah, yes• laughter, the best medicine. A sense of humor can change your life and maybe Lady Luck will smile upon us all in 1985 Let us join Lord Tennyson, then: "Ring nut the old, ring in the new, ring. happy bells across the snow The year is going' let him go.
