Good gift ideas
Need any ideas for gifts for the sports minded per-
son in your family?
How about some good Canadian content books?
Five new sports books are now on the shelves here
at the T -A and would make excellent Christmas
presents. They are all very recently off the presses.
Four are on hockey and one about baseball.
The first about hockey is simply entitled "Ballard".
Written by Toronto Globe and Mail sportswriter
William Houston it gives an inside look at Maple Leaf
Gardens behind closed doors and a look at the way the
media has made Harold Ballard Canada's Most
newsworthy and controversial public figure.
You meet the profane and irreverent Ballard on his
home territory, his friends and family, closest
associates, his players, coaches, general managers as
well as his friends and enemies in the fourth estate.
One of Ballard's sometime newspaper enemy is the
author of the hook. Houston has fought with Ballard,
been barred from his dressing rooms and press box and
was told "you'll get your throat cut if you go ahead and
write the book."
The second hockey book is simply called "Gretzky"
and that is enough to tell the story. This book on the,
great number 99 of the Edmonton Oilers is a little dif-
ferent than many of the others which have been
published.
The latest is written by Jim Taylor, a Vancouver
based sportswriter and Wayne's father, Walter Gret-
zky of Brantford.
We have heard the senior Gretzky in two radio in-
terviews about the book and it appears to be sort of
unusual with many stories not only about Wayne, but.
the entire Gretzky family which no one else could
possibly know about.
The third hockey book also has a simple title. it goes
by the name of "Tiger". Here again it doesn't take too
many hockey brains to know we are talking about Dave
"Tiger" Williams now with the Detroit Red Wings after
stops in Toronto and Vancouver.
The Williams book is written by James Lawton, a
sports columnist with the Vancouver Sun who has
covered the last three Stanley Cups.
"Here's a story of determination over talent, guts
over skill and raw energy over the odds in a rough,
tough, unforgiving game.
Arrestingly candid. Tiger is the story of hockey
from the ice up and William's recollections. comments
and inside spare none. least of all himself.
The competitive edge shows through in every line
of this book, an understanding of the team, the game
and above all, of winning. The result is a very special
hockey story about reaching the top in a game where
the standards are high. fame is fleeting and tenacity
counts.
The fourth book which is available locally is the
1984-85 official guide and record hook of the National
Hockey League.
11 is compiled by the NHL communications depart-
ment and public relations directors of the 21 NHL clubs.
Here is everything worth knowing about the NHL.
It's used by reporters and broadcasters covering NHL
games and is able to settle any argument and answer
any trivia question about our national sport.
Information goes hack to the NHL all star teams
beginning in 1931 and results of each of the all star
games since 1947. One interesting statistic we picked
out was the number of penalty shots awarded during
the 1983-84 season. Of the 18 penalty shots taken. 10
resulted in goals
Believe it or not, but, the only player to score on
two penalty shots was a Toronto Maple Leaf. it was
Greg Terrion and both were counted against the
Chicago Black Hawks. One came against Tony Esposito
in a t0-81oronto win and the other beat Murray Banner-
man in a 2-2 tie.
The only non hockey book we recommend is Foul
Balls written by Toronto Star writer Allison Gordon who
covered the activities of the Toronto Blue Jays for five
years.
Gordon tells the story of her experiences in the Blue
Jays dressing room as the first woman to invade the
so called privacy of the big league players.
Although she was treated well by some of the
players others did their best to make her visits as
unpleasant as possible.

Hawks get one point, lose ground in battle for second
The Exeter Hawks lost
ground in their battle for se-
cond place in the northern
division Junior "D" loop this
week as they mustered only
one point in two outings
against their closest rivals.
Lucan's Irish won their
third game in four starts
against the Hawks at the rec
centre, Friday, and then the
locals had to overcome a two -
goal deficit to gain a 4-4 split
with the third place Seaforth
Centenaires on Sunday.
The Hawks trail Lucan by
four points, although they
have five games in hand.
Seaforth holds down third,
one point behind the Irish and
three up on Exeter.
The Irish will have an op-
portunity to widen the gap as
they host the Hawks tonight
(Wednesday) in the fifth
meeting between the two
rivals. Exeter will be without
the services of starting net -
minder Pete Dearing in that
contest as he has a universi-
ty exam that will negate his
appearance.
Friday night, the Hawks
will host Bothwell Barons.
Rebound to Win
The Lucan Irish rebounded
from a 2-0 first period deficit
and went on to double the
score in their 8-4 triumph over
the Hawks, Friday.
Lucan took a 4-3 lead into
the third and promptly upped
it to 7-3 as they scored three
times in less than three
minutes to open the final
stanza.
Brent Martin and Al Craig
had a pair for the winners
with singles coming off the
sticks of Brent Bannerman,
Jeff Hodgins, Scott Gilder and
Wayne Urbshott.
Urbshott and Shawn
Schaeffer had three assists
each and Martin and Mark
Batmen added a pair.
Bill Glover scored twice for
the Hawks before being
ejected with Scott Balazs for
a fight in the second period.
Brian Horner and Steve Pro-
ut added the singles.
Scott Brintnell and Jeff
Rowe heldped out on two
goals and single assists were
recorded by Steve Batten and
Sean Whiteford.
Bart Powell recorded 33
saves to post the win for the
Irish, while Pete Dearing fac-
ed 33 shots before giving way
to Kevin Oke early in the third
period. The latter handled 16
shots and allowed one goal.
The Irish scored twice on
powerplays as theHawks took
20 of the 31 penalties assessed.
Rally for Tie
At home again Sunday after-
noon, the Hawks rallied for
two goals in the final seven
and a half minutes to gain the
split with the visiting Seaforth
Centenaires.
Tony Jones kept the locals
close with a goal in each of the
first and second period, but
the visitors scored late in the
middle stanza and again ear -

Irish pick up three points,
take over Junior 'D' second
The Lucan Irish picked up
three of a possible four points
this week to take over second
place in the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior D northern
grouping.
Wednesday at home, the
Irish held the league leading
Tavistock Braves to a 3-3 tie
and Friday they doubled the
score 8-4 on the Exeter Hawks
at the South Huron Rec
Centre.
Crunchers get
big victory
The Exeter atom Crun-
chers chalked up an im-
pressive 9-2 victory over Mit-
chell in house league hockey
play. Saturday.
Brent Miron was the
leading light for the Crun-
chers with five successful
shots. Jermey Brock was next
with two goals while Kevin
Johns and Jamie Rolph
scored in single fashion.

The Irish swing right back
into action tonight, Wednes-
day at home when the Exeter
Hawks will be in for a return
match. Friday, it's off to
Tavistock and Sunday to
Belmont.
A goal from the stick of
Steve Keanes on passes from
Wayne Urbshott and Brad
Hodgins with only three
minutes left in the third
period allowed the Irish to put
out a single point Wednesday
against Tavistock.
After Tavistock had taken a
1-0 first period lead on a goal
by Steve Rohl, the Irish
jumped in front in the middle
frame as Wayne Urbshott
scored on a three-way passing
effort with Brent Martin and
Steve Glenn at 51 seconds and
near the midway mark Scott
Balazs converted passes from
Brent Bannerman and Rob
Hardy.
Kevin Albrecht and Mike
Pearce put the Braves ahead •

Gretzky flying again
We often hear the question will Wayne Gretzky im-
prove his scoring records as he gets more mature and
pick up more experience in the National hockey
League.
The way the youngster from Brantford is starting
off in this the 1984-85 NHL season, the answer must be
a definite yes. After setting the scoring record in 1981-82
with 212 points. he tailed off a year ago to a mere 196
points.
After Thursday's win over the Boston Bruins, Gret-
zky now has 24 goals and 42 assists for a point total of
66. Lasing that same pace over the full 80 game schedule
and No. 99's season point total would be a whopping 229.
His career assist total now stands at 600.
Added income
Two members of the world champion Detroit Tigers
have been getting some extra income this summer from
another sporting venture.
Pitchers Milt Wilcox and Aurelio Lopez own a
racehorse called Shiaway Snappy which was named the
second best two year-old pacer in Michigan with earn-
ings this season in excess of $73,000.
3-2 and set the stage for the ty-
ing goal by Keanes.
Details of Friday's Ltican
win over the Exeter Hawks
appear elsewhere on these
sports pages.
