Isaiah: People of Israel arriv- ed back in their homeland after Exile in Babylon expec- ting great things to happen, but nothing did happen, they were disappointed. One view about this was that it was punishment for uasl sins. This passage likely written after the destruction of Jerusalem (587 BCE) con- tains three elements: Con- fidence in God, Plea for God's assistance, Description of the people's distress. People of Israel ask "Why does God delay salvation?" Paul sees the Christians in Corinth, despite the fact they are plagued by their human imperfections, making use of the gifts Christ has given them. Paul tells them to rely more heavily on these gifts in order to become more firm in their witness to Christ in their lives! Gifts: forgiveness of sins, reconciliation, harmony among people.
