At 13, he had made musical
history on two continents and
sung in half a dozen countries,
yet Kirkton's boy treble,
Jamie Westman has only now
received his first professional
contract. It is to perform in
the Toronto Symphony Or-
chestra Christmas program
on Dec. 20 in Roy Thomson
Hall.
Chosen from a field of boy
trebles who auditioned,
Westman will sing the
premiere of Howard Blake's
1983 composition The
Snowman, based on pictures
by Raymond Briggs. It will
also be his first major Cana-
dian orchestral engagement.
Errol Gay will conduct the
TS() Christmas program.

There will be two perfor-
mances on the 20th, an open
rehearsal in the morning and
the "official" program at 7:30
p.m.
For Westman, who was 13
on Sept. 16, it caps a year of
triumphs. He was recognized
for "outstanding achieve-
ment" by Perth County,
made a long-playing record,
did two musical tours of
Europe, received recognition
with a $500 award from
Canada's ministry of citizen-
ship and culture and made a
multitude of personal ap-
pearances for area service
clubs and at area churches.
Last spring, he toured
Austria, Poland and
Czechoslovakia with the New
England Conservatory of
Music Youth Chamber Or-
chestra singing in the Mahler
Symphony No. 4, a role in
which he received interna-
tional recognition, breaking
new ground in singing a part
usually taken by female
soloists. Only one other treble
has undertaken the part.
He made a second tour to
Europe last autufin as assis-
tant tour director to John
Shallenberger, boy -singer
manager and founder of the
Americas Boychoir.
Whestman's friend, Londoner
Micah Hodgkinson, sang on
that tour. Both are members
of the St. Michael's Roman
Catholic Church choir under
John F.M. Wood, who is

lunch brought the evening to
a close.
Xi Gamma Nu chapter
entertained sister chapters,
-Beta Theta and Alpha Pi at a
travelogue on the Caribbean,
October 30. Doug Ellison
showed a film on the area and
gave a very interesting talk
on the travel business. Prize
winners for best Caribbean
holiday attire were Susan
Mauer, Lois Godbolt and
Glenda Wagner. A honey-
mooner's gift package and a
gift certificate, both donated
by Ellison Travel. were won
by Susan Kraftcheck and San-
dra Campbell.
I,iz Taylor was hostess for
the November 6 meeting. The
program on the topic "Living
Gracefully: Meeting Life

presented by Sharon Davis
and Marion Snow in the form
of a discussion. The Roll Call
was answered by naming a
person, famous or infamous,
whom you feel exhibits
graceful qualities.
Members had been asked to
bring home a gift from their
summer holidays and the
Ways and Means Committee

It was decided to make a
donation to South Huron
Hospital to be used towards
the purchase of an Apnea
monitor to he loaned to
parents of infants as an alarm
system in cases of Sudden In-
fant Death Syndrome.
The group is also sponsor-
ing a contest in December for
the hest display of outdoor
