MARYS, ONT. 229-6309 a 229-6160 a 284-1210 1 1 By Jack Riddell MPP Early in the week Liberal Leader David Peterson rose in the Ontario Legislature to extend congratulations to three Conservative leader- ship candidates who have joined the Opposition's crusade to make Ontario Hydro more accountable to the taxpayers of this pro- vince. He took the Minister of Energy to task about the giant corporation, stating that "Three of the contenders for the throne have now become Hydro -bashers, very critical of the way that Ontario Hydro is being run at the moment". "These gentlemen out travelling the province, listen- ing with their ears close to the ground, are now very much aware that the public feeling is that there are tremendous problems at Ontario Hydro - that Ontario Hydro is out of control". In recent weeks, Treasurer Larry Grossman, Attorney - General Roy McMurtrey and Agriculture and Food Minister Dennis Timbrell have responded to questions by saying that they would support a review of Ontario Hydro. On the other hand, leadership contender In- dustry and Trade Minister Frank Miller has indicated that he does not believe the utility is out of control. (One of his supporters for the leadership is the current Minister of Energy.) Ever since the end of minority government in On- tario, the Conservatives have resisted all Opposition at- tempts to have tougher con- trols imposed on the Corpora- tion, and have argued that ex- isting review agencies were adequate. Citing the views of the three leadership hopefuls, David Peterson asked the Minister of Energy "Is the Minister not persuaded now... that indeed we do have to look at new ways to bring Ontario Hydro into some form • of accountability?" "He has been berated by the Opposition for a long time. Now his own colleagues are critical of the same things we have been critical of." The Minister has indicated that he will be guided by what he is told by his Cabinet col- leagues in Cabinet meetings rather than what is said on the hustings. He has also stated: "My mind has never been closed to the idea of a review, but I don't go for the proposition that Hydro is out of control." Agreement for Tourism development The Minister for Tourism and Recreation, the Honourable Reuben Baelz, announced in the Legislature that a new Canada -Ontario subsidiary agreement for tourism development was signed. The new $44 million program will be split 50-50 by the provincial and the federal governments and will apply to all regions of Ontario ex- cept Metro Toronto. Through this agreement substantial assistance will flow to the pro- vincial tourism industry over the next five years. The major priority of the new program will be the establishment of new and the develoiSment of existing ma- jor year-round destination resorts and attractions. Pro- jects that attract Americans and other visitors will receive particular attention. This seg- ment of the program will ac- count for $38 million of the $44 million available. The remaining $6 million will be allocated for planning and feasibility studies, marketing and visitors ser- vices. The funds will be made availahle through repayable and nonrepayable assistance. The Minister also announc- ed that in addition to and in conjunction with the Ontario Development Corp. the Ministry is developing a means whereby incentive loans will be made availahle to help smaller operators meet the recent changes in provincial fire safety regula- tions This money will be availahle for the purchase of fire safety equipment to en- sure operators will be able to meet the new requirements. Special Occasion permits On occasion 1 am approach- ed by constituents to assist them in obtaining liquor licenses. Sometimes the dif- ficulties and delays arise as a result of red tape but some times they are as a result of non-compliance with the regulations. Apparently applicants for Special Occasion Permits often neglect to read the ap- plication form before signing it. One segment on the ap- plication refers to Section 41, subsection 2 of the Regula- tions, which deals with advertising. The applicant on signing the form agrees not to adver- tise if the occasion is not for gain or profit, audios a wed- ding, wedding anniversary, a atag, a stag and doe affair or any reception of a social nature. : It is very important that persons applying for a liquor licence to hold any social function, comply with the regulations or as I was advis- ed, the Liquor Licence Board of Ontario will have no option but to cancel or refuse the license. jr-741k;ki,mridiftga This Week's 2% Bags of Milk $2.99 DAIRY STORE 4-H PROVINCIAL HONOURS — Nancy Morris, Marlyne Denham, Rene Drost and Sharon Fell received Provincial Honours at Tuesday's Perth 4-H Achievement Night held at Kirkton.
