Crediton WI celebrates 6$ years,

Crediton
The Crediton Womens In-
stitute celebrated their 65th
anniversary on Wednesday
evening, with an old fashion-
ed supper. All other Huron
South Institutes were invited
to take part in the festivities.
Several area merchants
donated door prizes and table
favours for the occasion and
the Womens Institute would
like to thank them for their
generous gifts.
Cutting the anniversary
cake went to the oldest
members in the Crediton
Branch, Della Sims and Cora
Wein.
Irene Haugh read the
history of our Institute as it
will appear in the historical
atlas.
Mrs. Bruce Shapton
brought greetings from the
District and as our District
President gave an inspiring
message ending with the
quote "Women's Institute,
pillars of the community."
Past President Mrs. Dave
Cottel presented a Provincial
Scroll on behalf of the pro-
vince, to our President Mrs.
Norm Eveland. Programe
convener Mrs. Gerald Dear-
ing opened the meeting with
a poem. LeAnne McIntyre
and Melisa Lee sang two
duets, accompanied by their
music teacher, Mr. Barron.
The Crediton ladies then
put on a play consisting of a
meeting from 1919.
A copy of the first meeting
was presented to the Institute.
The beautiful hand script was
framed and will be hung in
the Institute room of the hall.
Guest speaker for the even-
ing was Mrs. Oliver McIn-
tosh. She was introduced by
her school pal, Mrs. Harvey
Hodgins. A light lunch of. An-
niversary cake, cookies and
hot mulled cider was served
at the end of the meeting.
The Crediton and District
Social Club will be holding
their Christmas dance, Satur-
day evening, the Blenders will
be providing the music. The
Children's Christmas party
will be held December 9 in the
town hall. Cartoons begin at
2 p.m.

Boys basketball season starts
South Huron's boys cage
teams opened their season
this week with a string of ex-
hibition and tournament
matches.
Wednesday, the local teams
played host to Strathroy. The
junior Panthers were trounc-
ed in their first game of
season 82-16 by a strong
Strathroy team while the
seniors found themselves on
the losing side of a 66-62
decision.
The young junior team pro-
ved little match for a strong,
quick Strathroy team. Dalton
Ford was the high scorer for
First euchre of
season at Shipka

A very successful annual
Harvest dance, sponsored by
Shipka Community members
was held last Saturday night
at Parkhill Community
Centre.
The first euchre party of
this season will be held
tonight, November 28, at
Shipka Community Centre.
A 50-50 draw was held dur-
ing the evening. Winners of
cash awards went to - first,
Nancy Finkbeiner, Shipka,
$250.00, second draw of $150.00
to Andrea Mezenberg, of Lon-
don; and third draw of $100.00
to Andy (ticks, of Parkhill.
A delicious lunch of turkey
and dressing, ham, baked
beans, cole slaw and rolls was
served.
Congratulations to Dick and
Annie Zielman on the arrival
of their second grandchild.

Stith a little girl born, Wednes-
day, November 21, to their
daughter Susie and Wayne
Robson, of Essex.
Angie Zielman, and :30
classmates of Grade 6, from
Stephen Central, enjoyed a 2
hour nature hike in Hay
swamp last Friday afternoon.
They left at 10:30 a.m. accom-
panied by teachers Mrs. M.
Thornton and Mr. A. Brand.
They built a fire and had a
cook nut for lunch of hot dogs,
hamburgs, beans and bacon.
On the hike they studied about
trees and animals for their
science class.
Hugh and I were supper
guest Saturday night with
Ross and Donna Corbett, of
Hensall area, and we enjoyed
a few solo games in the even-
ing. Visitors during the week
and Sunday with us were
George and Marie Chowen, of
Stratford. Mrs. Ida Jackson
and Donald Jackson, of
I lensall.

while Brian Quinn and Trevor

McGregor, Marty Merner,
Mark Lomas, Mark Winters,
Rob Hoffman.
The senior Panthers found
themselves down 14 points at
half time but managed to
close the gap in the second
half to leave the score at 66-62.
Captains Rob Tait and
Stephen Merner led the South
Huron scoring attack with 20
and 12 points respectively.
Other scores were Brian Topp
with ten, Scot Merrylees with
eight, Scott Lodie with six and
VinceParenf and Mike Clarke
with four and two points
respectively.
Other players on the roster
are Scott Miller, Dave Grat-
ton, Greg O'Toole, Murray
Rundle, Jeff Maxwell, John
Willemson and Derek
Hippern.
The senior cagers also par-
ticipated in a tournament at
Medway over the weekend
and enjoyed mixed success,
defeating Montcalm in their
first game but losing to Lucas
and Laurier.
The locals came back from
a two point deficit at half time
to beat their first opponent of
the tournament, Montcalrr
62-47.
Again Rob Tait led the at-
tack with 26 points and a total
of 15 rebounds. Scott Lovie ac-
counted for 12 points, Brian
Topp and Scott Miller added
nine and seven points respec-
tively and Stephen Merner
and Scot Merrylees each
scored four.
Against Laurier the senior
Panthers fell behind 16 points
before the half time buzzer
and were unable to regain
ground as the match finished
with the locals on the losing
side of a 59-33 score.
Tait and Topp were the top
South Huron scorers with
eleven and ten points respec-
tively. Scott Lovie had six
points, Merner added four
and Scott Miller rounded off
the scoring with two points.
In their final game of the
weekend, the locals were
defeated 62-48 by Lucas of
London.
Tait led the scoring again
with 15 points and had nine re-
bounds. Merner counted for
twelve points, Merrylees
scored seven and Lovie pick-
ed up six.
The local cagers are involv-
ed in exhibition matches this
week including games Thurs-
day at the local school when
the Panthers play host to i
Parkhill. The senior team
travels to Regina Mundi to
participate in a tourney Fri-
day and Saturday of this
week.

The regular Monday even-
ing euchre party in the com-
munity centre was very much
attended with 12 tables play-
ing convened by Roy and Lil
Swartz and Allan and Doris
Pfaff with prize winners as
follows: High scores
Elizabeth Lamport, Earl
Morgan, lone hands, Velma
Harvey, Percy Noels, low
score Kay Armstrong and
Jack Essery.
Next euchre will be
December 3 convened by
Leroy and Irene Oesch and
Pat and Joyce Willert.
The senior citizens will
meet the same day in the
afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Miss Wendy Horton has
returned to College in Peter-
borough after being home for
a week following her father's
funeral.
