In basketball Giris tains in s.ini'fInaIs The SHDHS girls' cage teams both ddeated Stratford Central in quartet nal action to advance to sei l play where hopes of r con- ference action were ended, as they lost to the strong Goderich teams. The senior match -up in a very quiet Stratford gym- nasium started off very slow- ly but gradually picked up momentum as they play wore on. The local seniors found themselves down by one point at half time but continued to persevere. After three quarters of play, the Panthers were losing by three when coach Stephen Merner decid- ed to switch from a zone to man-to-man defence. The strategy change work- ed as the locals found themselves on top 33-28 at the end of regular play. Irene Brand and Jacqui Cottrell led the scoring with 12 and 10 points respectively while Diane Willis and Andrea Zim- mer each ended four points. The seniors had not ex- pected to win but pulled off one of their better matches to walk away with the win and advance to semi-final play. The Panthers were soundly eliminated from further ac- tion by Goderich. The Vikings opened a 35-13 lead before the half time buzzer sounded and continued to impress home town fans, leaving the score at 63-30. Cottrell was the scoring leader for the local seniors with a total of 13 points. Irene Brand collected seven points and had 12 rebounds. The Goderich girls executed the Last break to perfection and were tough to stop. The Panthers finished their respectable season off with fashion, playing pretty well against a very strong Goderich squad. It was a similar scene for the junior cage team, margin- ly defeating Central and los- ing to Goderich by 30 points. One basket was the dif- ference in the junior quarter- final at the local school against Central, as it was when the two teams met dur- ing regular season. The lead swung back and forth but the locals found themselves ahead 32-30 when the clock ran out. A strong cheering section helped the juniors cause throughout the fast paced match. Diane Deraing paced the way against Central with 10 points. Kellie Whiteford and Kristin Lovie picked up eight points each and Beth Sweeney added six. • The crowd payed a big part in Goderich for semi-final ac- tion as well. The junior cagers had trouble clicking and a strong full court press made it difficult for the locals to set up their offence. Goderich opened up a 20 point lead before the half and continued to add to that in the second half leaving the score at 53-23 in the Viking's favour. Eight players figured in on the scoring for the locals. Kel- • gain split to Brad Scott and Steve McIntyre. In the second period, Mark Morrissey and Bud Richard- son scored for Exeter on solo dashes and Bryan Quinn con- verted a pass from Bill Lessard. Against St. Marys, Chris Tiedeman was a double goal scorer for Exeter. Bud Richardson assisted on both and single assists were pick- ed up by Dave Russell and Terry Zachar. Bill Lessard notched a single goal for Exeter on a three-way effort with Bryan Quinn and Jim Lewis and Quinn was successful on a pass from Tim Moore. Tony McEwen scored two goals for St. Marys. Adding single scores were Geoff Slater, Owen Lessard, Tim Campbell, Andy Gibb, Tom Teahen and Chris Turner. ly Coon led the scoring with six points and Kellie Whiteford and Laurie For- rester scored four each. Beth Sweeney, Sonya Shantz, Kristin Lovie, Patti Bierling added two each while Diane Dearing rounded out the scor- ing with one point. Yesterday the junior girls travelled to Stratford to take on Northwestern for the op- portunity to compete at WOSSA. WOSSA will be held at the local school starting the morning of November 30. In their previous meeting, Northwestern defeated the local juniors by one basket. The players would enjoy the opportunity to play in the WOSSA tourney since it is played here.
