First title in five years Beat Wingham 28-12
SH Panthers win HP junior football championship
The South Huron junior
Panthers claimed their first
Huron -Perth football title in
five years, defeating the
Madill Mystangs 28-12 to
bring the league trophy home
for the first time since 1979.
Wingham was the site for
• the championship match. The
•
Mustangs finished the regular
season undefeated with only
one tie, allowing them home
field advantage for the
playoffs.
Having to play on the op-
ponents turf seemed not to
bother the local juniors who
opened the scoring on their
first possession.
Taking the ballon their own
35 -yard line, the Panthers
marched down field to set up
Scott Heywood's first
touchdown. Heywood took the
ball in from four yards out to
open the scoring and Jon
O'Connor converted the

major.
Madill came right back
with a touchdown of their own
the first time the ball was in
their possession. The
Mustang major came on a
long run from speedy fullback
Sandy McDonald. The locals
stopped Madill on the two
point conversion attempt to
remain in the lead.
Heywood scored his second
touchdown of the afternoon on
a three -yard run which cap-
ped off another long drive.
O'Connor was again suc-
cessful on the conversion at-
tempt to build on the South
Huron lead.
The Panthers got the ball
back again later in the second
quarter after fielding a Madill
punt deep in their own end.
The locals managed to move
the ball out to the 25 -yard line
with a first down and it ap-
peared the Panthers would
march the ball out of trouble.
On the first down play,
quarterback Jon O'Connor
was hit in the backfield before
being able to hand the ball off,
causing the ball to squirt
loose.
Madill recovered the ball
and set up a major score
before half time. Once againt
the Mustangs were unsuc-
cessful on the conversion and
the Panthers led 14-12 at half
time.
Scott Heywood's final
touchdown of the day came on
a short run from within the
five yard line after a drive
covering 75 yards. O'Connor
made good on the convert and
the Panthers began to control
the game.
Late in the fourth quarter
with time running out the
Mustangs found themselves
in a punting position. The
Panthers regained possession
of the ball after stopping a
Madill runner in an attempt
to gain a first down by runn-
ing out of punt formation.
This set up Larry
McCarter's game capping
touchdown that drove the last
peg into the Madill coffin.
O'Connor completed a perfect
kicking day converting the
final major.
The win gave coach Dave
Cox his first championship
since he took over the reins as
head coach upon the retire-
ment of Doug Ellison.
"It was a coach's
pleasure," Cox said, "It was
the type of game where you
can't pick gems stars. It was
an excellent 12 -man effort
both ways."
The Panthers were confi-
dent that if they played well
for four quarters of football
they would emerge as cham-
pions. The team executed
Cox's game plan superbly and
were able to make ad-
justments to take away
Madill's strength.
An all-round excellent ef-
fort was the key in bringing a
junior football championship
to the local school for the first
time in five seasons.
