With no strings attached
Since writing
last week's
column about the plight of the
starving In Ethiopia, I have
been immeasurably cheered
by our government's pledge
to take action in organizing
relief while encouraging other
nations to follow its lead. It
was heartening to see that our
Minister of External Affairs, :10,- ; T ; t y 2
Joe Clark, could be moved r . F..'1'" 'ta €
might have been spared?
One can only pray that this
government will do
everything in its power to ex-
pedi to the assistance and not
waste precious time by set-
ting up more committees for
furth study and discussion.
tion in Ethiopia is one of those
times when if too much time
is spent on discussion, it will
be too late.
Last weekend, I attended a
Faith at Work Conference
with about 100 other people.
almost to tears as he viewed
the horrifying pictures of the
victims..
It was, however, upsetting
to learn that the world had
been forewarned of the
famine's onslaught as long
ago as a year back, by such
people as our then Minister of
Agriculture, Eugene Whelen.
The alarm was viewed as be-
ing insubstantial or painted
too black by some other of-
ficials, and was thus ignored.

ple starving by the dozens ...
there are no problems to

isn't time for that." The situa-

One of them was Rudy, a
slightly retarded IT 311 of
around 50. You couldr.'t help
spotting him because he was
always in the thick of things,
participating with all stops
out. When we sang, he clap-
ped his hands loudly and beat
time with his feet, glancing
around with perplexity when
the rest of us didn't get into
the spirit. When we prayed.
he lifted his arms, praising
God wholeheartedly, but
again, looking slightly
askance at some who just sat
there, showing no emotion.
It was rather risky to smile
at Rudy because it always
prompted a huge bear hug, or
maybe even a resounding
kiss. He was without inhibi-
tions, and he didn't care if you
were 16 or 60, he loved you
just the same.
We had a marvellously
talented pianist at the con-
ference, one who thrilled us as
his nimble fingers improvis-
ed up and down the keyboard.
However, when he had to
leave early, the chairperson
asked if someone could fill in.
Rudy immediately jumped to
his feet, assuring her he
could 'read' music. Peering
through heavy lenses, he
earnestly concentrated on the
music, his thick hands posi-
tioned over the keys until he
was given the nod to bang
down the first chord. He did
pretty well, too. Oh, his play-
ing was a bit loud, and there
were times the base notes
didn't harmonize with the tre-
ble, or instances when he got
a half a line ahead of us or
behind us, but the look on his
face made up for everything.
All weekend, he'd listened
to others speak, sing and con-
duct seminars, but now, it
was his turn. When the song
was finished, he turned to us,
a radiant smile bursting over
his face. He had shared his
gift, with no strings attached
... just for the sheer joy of giv-
ing it.
When I got home, I went to
Jean Vanier's hook,
"Followers of Jesus", and
turned to where he speaks of
the importance of allowing
the handicapped, with whom
he works, to give. He says,
"The important thing is not to
stifle people's gifts, but to
give them a chance to love
and to enter the world of shar-
ing. ft is terrible to always be
on the receiving end. We must
learn how to receive the
slightest gift .with joy and
thanks and wonderment,
precisely because it is a gift
of love. 'l'hus 'we' learn to
give with love, with humility
and without seeking credit.
I'm happy to say that most
people at the conference
received Rudy's gift with
love. We had listened to elo-
quent speakers, sat through
soul -stirring seminars, but it
seems to me Itudy's gift was
the best of all
