The Voice of Leo At the last meeting of the Zurich Lions club on October 15, there were 15 members and 13 guests present. The director's meeting, the fourth Monday of each month was held at the home of president Richard Erb on October 22. Five members attended the Huron Park Lions Club in Centralia on October 18 as November is the Inter -club visit month in our district. At the directors meeting it was decided that they "Join Hands to answer the call to serve" and help cover the ex- terior of the Ronald McDonald House with bricks. Each member will be asked to sell eight bricks. A motion was also passed to pay the first installment of $5,000 for the ice compressor at the arena. On October 28, five members attended the Lions International Breakfast and Cabinet meeting for district A-15 in St. Marys. Before the meeting on . Monday, November 5, Lions canvassed for the C.N.I.B. Their speaker was John Paff. On Saturday, November 10 they will deliver the new telephone books. November 15 is the R.C.M.P. show at Bingeman Park, Kitchener for the Lions Club Foundation. Religion classes Sunday, the last of six even- ings for this term of the high school religion' classes, was an entertainment night. The leaders showed the film Fid- dler on the Roof and served popcorn and soft drinks. Cursillo Pat and Evelyn Rgier made a meaningful and rewarding Cursillo weekend. The cur- sillo has been held for the past two weeks at St. Andrew's Church in London. Several college-age students made a nice retreat, at the Michaelite House near London on the weekend. St. Boniface Bazaar The bazaar held at St. Boniface school gym last Saturday was a big success with a good attendance throughout the day. Some lucky winners were, afghan and place mats, Fr. Mooney; framed picture of Christ and a serving box to Sister Florian. The quilt was won by Carolyn Regier and cabbage patch doll and clothes went to Debbie Pennings. Everyone was also invited to the Mt. Carmel Bazaar on Tuesday, November 6, which had a good turnout. Baptisms Lance Ulrich Percy Bedard, son of Ivan and Rose - Mary Bedard, Hensall, was baptized on Sunday November 4 at St. Boniface Church by Fr. Mooney with god -parents being Julia Dutt- mann, Hensall and Percy Bedard Jr. Zurich. A get- together followed at the baby's home after the ceremony. Mirja Helena, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Eilers of RR 2 Zurich, was baptized at St. Boniface Church on Sunday with god -parents by proxy for relatives in Ger- many being Mr. and Mrs. Werner Schoeley from Thedford. Successful operation I'm sure everyone is happy to hear that little Derek Denomme is doing very well after his liver transplant recently in Pitt - operation aburgh Hospital. If all goes well he and his parents Joe and Linda should be back home together again by Christmas with the rest of the family. Retirement party A very nice surprise party was held for Gertie Fleischauer on Sunday after- noon at the Hay township hall in honor of her retirement coming up at the end of the year. Before the weather gets too bad, over 80 friends and relatives gathered together to wish her the best. Supper was catered by Bir- die Finkbeiner's group. Ar- rangements were made by ST. Sunday, November 11 is Remembrance Day. The school children will have a short ceremony in the St. Boniface gym on Friday, November 9 at 1:00 p.m. Personals Mr. and Mrs. John Denomme of RR 2 Zurich, along with Mr. and Mrs. Ray- mond Denomme, recently spent a few days visiting with relatives in Ottawa and Montreal. Mark and Mary -Theresa Denomme and two children from Kitchener and her brother spent the weekend with his parents Bern and John Denomme at their cottage. Gerard Bedard and a friend from British Columbia (both attend St. Peter's Seminary in London) spent the weekend with the former's parents, Leandre and Teresa Bedard and family, RR 2 Zurich. Louise Regier and nephew Marc Regier of London visited with Lee and Rose Regier Saturday and Sunday., Steven Stark and friend, Cheryl of St. Thomas visited on Sunday with his mother, Mrs. Therese Stark and relatives in the area. Nathalie Levigne has returned to Montreal after spending two weeks at the home of John and Marilyn Gieger. She had been on a work term program learning about horses. Anne Flaxbard and Cathy Merner both celebrated their birthdays recently. The card players club held a little pary for Anne's birth- day at the home of Belle Merner. 'The grand opening of Lor- raine's Crafts new location was held on the weekend. She has moved from across from the post office to the former location of the Village Floral Shop on Victoria St. Congratulations to Lucien and Nora Corriveau of the Spruce Villa Apts who celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on Saturday, November 3. Their daughter and son-in-law Rebecca and Ray Geromette of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, spent the weekend with them. Joan Smith, Agnes Regier, Verlyn Fishet, and Ina Neeb attended the WI convention in St. Marys last Thursday. Best wishes for a speedy recovery are extended to Peter Deichert, a patient in Exeter Hospital, Milt Oesch and Leonora Turkheim on returning ,home from the hospital and to Pastor Donna Kyllonen who is back home after spending some time recuperating in the States with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Cor- riveau are visiting with relatives in Michigan. A good turn -out was on hand to hear Rev. Wm. l' . Russell of the Canadian 13iblie Society speak at the annus sleeting at St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Sunday evening. Two Zurich girls, hose Mary and Sheila Regier, daughters of Mary and Karl Regier were among a team of five from S.II.D.H.S. who took part in cross .country team running on Saturday in Georgetown. They came in seall Ontario schools.venth Othersof on the team were Jeanetteout VanEsbroeck, Lindy Dillon and Irene Dietrich. Good work, girls. Members of Mozart's Melody Makers band, and their wives enjoyed going to a musicians union banquet and dance on Sunday in Strat- ford at the Victorian Inn along with others from the area. 'Pony and Marlene Bedard recently attended a three-day convention for the association of counties and regions held in Orillia One of the main topics discussed was return of capital punishment which the majority were in favor of. It's nice to see that Marie !fess is a resident at the Blue Water Rest Home and that her friends can still drop in for a visit. Fitness: What it does for your body it does for your mind. Cougar Column Grades 1 and 2 - In Room 2, we have been talking about the different kinds of hats that people wear in their jobs or when playing. We had a very interesting display of the various kinds of hats. Grades 2 and 3 - During Oc- tober, grade 2-3 participated in several events and ac- tivities. Grade 2 wrote a magazine called "The Wit- ches' Weekly" especially for Hallowe'en. On October 25, the winners of the Hat Day contest were Brian Gingerich and Jodie McGee. Each received a free hot dog. On October 30, at the Hallowe'en Costume Parade, the winners from grade 2-3 were a witch, Jodie McGee, a devil Jaime McGee, a jIen t Monday evening two colour films "The Beaver Family," and "Grandma's Quilt" were shown. A slide presentation of the 1984 Octoberfest Parade and the Trachkenfest held at the Kitchener arena during Octoberfest was also -shown. This was followed by the ser- ving of coffee, tea and cookies. Tuesday morning the Kindergarten children of Mt. Carmel school visited our residents dressed up in their Halloween costumes and presented a delightful pro- gram under the direction of Mrs. Ryan. The residents then had their 30 -minute exer- cise program in the dining room. Wednesday evening, Hallo- we'en, we had many little visitors at the Rest Home to the delight of our residents. The Zurich Nursery School visited the home on Thursday with their children all dress- ed up from Hallowe'en, and presented a very nice pro- gram under the direction of Mrs. Debbie Denomme. Thursday afternoon some residents had the opportunity to be taken to Goderich to do some shopping at the Sun - coast mall. This was made possible because Mr. and Zurich Public School Chinese girl, Leah Siebert and a clown Jason deBlieck. Following the parade we celebrated Hallowe'en with a party. A miniature Great Pumpkin visited us. His name is Matthew Eagleson. Our class had the Hallowe'en assembly and the Primary Choir sang three Hallowe'en songs. Grade 4 and 5 - October has been an interesting month for Room VI. We enjoyed the Bicentennial program "Music About 200", which was presented in our gym. Our class participated in a Funny Follies Fashion Show when we had assembly this month. On the same day there was another hot dog sale. The class had fun taking part in /mpiei Mrs. Marc Chalut volunteered their time for this occasion. In the evening a video program was presented to,the residents in the front lob- by. A thank you should go to Mr. C. Alexander for making this weekly program possible. The Friday morning shuf- fleboard competition was held for an hour and a half. Friday evening the residents enjoyed their favorite program "Bingo". Do you know there are 35 to 40 residents who par- ticipate'? It is just wonderful to have such a good response. Every evening the residents enjoy a very nice snack hour between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the staff luch room. Mrs. Joyce Alexander, a resident of the Apartments, serves this lunch. Mrs. Alex- ander has been preparing the coffee and tea, and serving it with some cookies for at least five evenings a week for the past two years. A very warm thank you, Joyce, for a job well done. It is very much ap- preciated by the residents. Mrs. Oriole Westlake is still a patient at South Huron Hospital. We wish her a quick recovery. The Sunday evening chapel service was conducted by Rev. Peter Snell of Exeter. the Hat Day as well. The an- nual Hallowe'en Parade was amusing and scary. Grades 6 and 7 - On Tues- day, October 30 we had a costume parade. This is when students wear their costumes and parade around the gym. Prizes were awarded to the most comical, scariest and most original. All. students had a great time. Grade 8 - The Student Coun- cil held another very suc- cessful Hat Day at Zurich Public School. The boys and girls in each class with the best decorated hat won a free hot dog at the Hot Dog Sale that same day. Winners in Room 8 were Rob McLeish and Sherri Erb. The hats were very creative and original. On Thursday, October 25,and Wednesday, October 24, Z.P.S. held its Parent- Teacher Interviews. This gave the parents a chance to discuss the progress of their child's achievements with their teacher. Mrs. Haggitt our secretary worked hard to organize all the times for interviews. Once again Z.P.S. has pro- duced a fine blend of costumes at the annual Hallowe'en Costume Parade held in the auditorium on Tuesday, October 30 at 12:30. This year we had an abun- dance of entrants. It made it very hard for the judges! The categories were scariest, comical, and most original. Quite a few parents were in attendance. The sports reps. Tim Bullock and Kelly Kirk have made up the House League volleyball and dodgeball teams. The teams will play through the noon -hour, and the best players will be pick- ed to represent Z.P.S. at the regional tournament at a later date. The five volleyball teams are as folows: (Akers, Ball busters, Nibblers, Spikes, Bumpers. The two dodgeball teams are the Hot Shots and ('ool ('ats. Good luck to all the participants.
