HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes Advocate, 1984-11-07, Page 11Page 10 Times -Advocate, November 7, 1984 United Church celebrates Methodist influence with special service The Order for Morning Prayer every Lord's Day of the Methodist Church was us- ed as the Order of Service on Sunday morning at the United Church when they celebrated the 200th Anniversary of Methodism and the 100th Anniversary of the Union of the Methodists in Canada. The hymns by Charles and John Wesley were used throughout the service and the senior choir sang one of Charles Wesley's hymns Jesus Lover of My Soul. For the chidlren's sermon. Mr. McDonald spoke about A Horse as a Minister and told the story of how the horse was used to bring God's word and Christ's salvation to all people through the Circuit Rider. For the sermon Mr. McDonald told of the role of Methodists over the years. To millions, he said, John Wesley broug»t the power of the Ho- ly Spirit. To Wesley, and to Methodists ever since, the im- portant question is not the state of mind but the state of the heart. This is also the im- portant question for the United Church of Canada. On- ly with the Holy Spirit can we become the church that God intended. At the close of the service a circuit rider visited the con- reation and told of the ex- periences of a circuit rider as he told the story to his horse Salvation The circuit rides was played by Cecil Pepper in proper costume along with his orange -maned (stick) horse, Salvation. Hilda Payne greeted the congregation and John Rowcliffe, Murray Wareing, Murray McGregor and Mark McGregor were the ushers. The congregation were reminded of the Remem- brance Service next Sunday at 11:01 a.m. in the church and then to the Cenotaph for the laying of wwalks at 11:45 a.m. Following the service a Fellowship Hour was held with Audrey Christie and Dorothy Brintnell as hostess. Rena Caldwell and Dorothy !Vickie served a delicious lunch. � Baptism service The service of baptism was held in Carmel Presbyterian Church on Sunday with Rev. Kenneth Knight in charge speaking on "Renewing the Covenant". Craig Douglas and Jamie Lee, twin children of Betty and Douglas Eckel, and Gregory George, son of Anne and Bradley Mousseau, were baptized. Carmel P('W The P.C.W. of Carmel Presbyterian Church held a most successful bake sale at their annual bazaar on Satur- day afternon. There was a good display of baked goods, produce, plants, etc. Tickets were drawn at the tea which was in charge of the Arnold Circle Evening Auxiliary and the lucky winner was Mrs. Maggie Campbell of the Bluewater Rest Home. Three Links Seniors The November meeting of the Three Links Senior Citizens will be held on Tues- day, November 13, when Carl and Hilda Payne will be show- ing the pictures of the Heritage Tour the latter took in Britain. Everyone welcome. Queensway news On Monday afternoon we celebrated Hallowe'en with the Explorers from Hensall. We enjoyed dressing up and playing games with the children. Rev. Kenneth Knight led the church service on Tues- day afternoon. On Wednesday afternoon we gathered in the activity room to prepare candy for all the chidlren who came for "Trick or treating". As we did so, we listened to readings of The Highway Man by Alfred Noyes and The Cremation of Sam McGee by Robert Service. On Thursday afternoon the ladies from Hensall United Church, Unit 1, played bingo with us. With the exception of a few last-minute details, our new facilities here at Queensway are completed. We welcome any inquiries about our ser- vices and we encourage you to visit us at any time. Routh Huron Youth for Christ South Huron Youth for Christ held their November Rally on Saturday night, November 3, with around 160 in attendance. Director Ron Westlake was in charge, opening the rally with a live- ly sing song. Rev. John Camp - hell, (:rand Bend, opened with prayer. A group of young people fro Bayfield put on a skit advertising the Wes Aarun Winter Camp at Develan, New York, in February.
